Discover Křižany – Church, Rocks and Cycling Route
Křižany combines an impressive cultural history with distinctive rock formations and diverse opportunities for actively exploring the surrounding area. Here, you can discover a church with medieval origins, a cultural monument on a yellow-marked hiking trail, and the landscape around Ještěd in your own way. The town also offers various starting points for trip planning: culture, hiking, climbing, cycling and historical traces are all clearly identifiable themes alongside one another.
Church of St. Maximilian: Medieval Origins and a Late Baroque Interior
One particularly prominent cultural monument is the originally Gothic Church of St. Maximilian, which dates back to 1384. Its architecture features a single-nave layout with a rectangular floor plan and a polygonally ended presbytery. A tower erected in 1684 stands on the west side. The building therefore combines several clearly distinguishable historical layers, which can already be seen in its exterior form.
The interior is also worth a closer look. The church is furnished in the Late Baroque style, including an altar, painted panels, a wooden gallery and a rural organ. Those looking for historical details on a trip to Křižany will find more than just a place name here: they will find a specific building with its own architectural and artistic character.
Stará škola Křižany on the Hiking Trail
Another historical stop is Stará škola Křižany. It was declared a cultural monument in 1996 and is located on the yellow-marked hiking trail between Pruský kříž and Malý Ještěd. Cultural events have occasionally been held there since 2021. This place thus combines the character of a monument with a trail route and individual cultural occasions. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you want your days to focus more on local history, the landscape or a longer cycling tour.
Krkavčí skály and the Landscape around Ještěd
Krkavčí skály offer nature experiences. The sandstone massif features a rock viewing platform called Vyhlídková, with views of the Ještědský hřbet ridge. The rocks are used by climbers and thus appeal to different ways of experiencing the landscape: you can focus on the geological character and the views, or consider the rocks from the perspective of climbing.
The Solvay quarry above Křižany is open to the public. The three-level Solvay quarry on the Ještědský hřeben ridge was still in operation in the 1920s. The mountain of Rozsocha is also located nearby; the surroundings of Křižany also include Ještěd, Pískový vrch, Sedlecký Špičák and the Kaple Nejsvětější Trojice church. Valdštejn Church lies in the wider regional surroundings of Křižany.
Ploučnice Cycling Route from Křižany Railway Station
Cyclists also have a clear starting point: the Ploučnice cycling trail is signposted as Cycling Route No. 15 and is almost 100 kilometers long. The first stage begins at Křižany railway station. This makes the route an independent option for your planning if you would like to combine a longer cycling tour with a specific starting point.
