Reichenberg – Mountains, UNESCO and Bohemian Culture
Those who choose Reichenberg as a travel destination will discover a remarkable combination of mountain landscapes, protected natural areas and Bohemian culture in the Liberec Region. Between the Jizera Mountains, Bohemian Paradise and the Máchův kraj region, paths lead through forests and moorlands, past historic châteaux, museums and places with a lively glassmaking tradition. This allows you to plan your trip according to your interests, whether as a nature experience, a cultural programme or a varied combination of both.
Mountains, protected areas and distinctive landscapes
The Liberec Region includes Krkonoše National Park and five protected landscape areas: České středohoří, Jizera Mountains, Lusatian Mountains, Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj and Bohemian Paradise. The Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area extends across the Jizera Mountains and their foothills between Liberec, Frýdlant, Nové Město pod Smrkem, Kořenov, Tanvald and Jablonec nad Nisou. There you will find original mountain spruce forests, peat bogs, meadows, pastures and scattered rural settlements.
This landscape character is particularly vivid in Jizerka. The dispersed settlement is linked to Bukovec and the Rašeliniště Jizerky peat bog; educational trails provide information about the area. A route to the Jizera leads through a former primeval forest and can be combined with visits to the Klečové louky and Na Čihadle peat bogs. At 1,124 metres, Smrk is the highest mountain in the Czech part of the Jizera Mountains. From its lookout point, views extend towards Poland, the Frýdlantsko area, the Krkonoše Mountains and the northern Jizera Mountains.
Combine nature experiences with cultural discoveries
The Liberec Region is also known for its preserved folk architecture and for industrial and residential buildings associated with the textile and glass industries. In the Crystal Valley, you can meet glassmakers and jewellers while visiting glassworks, glass factories and other businesses. At the Museum of the Bohemian Paradise in Turnov, exhibitions focus on climbing on sandstone rocks and minerals, including Bohemian garnet.
Châteaux and castles also add their own distinctive accents. Trosky Castle stands on an isolated volcanic rock formation and was founded on volcanic basalt rocks in the late 14th century. At Lemberk Château, the Bajkový sál with its Renaissance coffered ceiling from 1610 is part of the main visitor route. In Sychrov, the Zámek knížete Kamila route showcases the interiors of the Rohan family's summer residence from the second half of the 19th century. The English Park has paths leading to viewing pavilions and benches.
Lakes, UNESCO sites and regional orientation
For a different kind of day trip, Máchovo jezero offers sightseeing boat trips and walks around the lake. The Bohemian Paradise in the Liberec Region is part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network. The Jizera Mountains Beech Forest Nature Reserve has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe since 2021. Overall, the Liberec Region is divided into the five tourism areas of the Lusatian Mountains, Jizera Mountains, Krkonoše, Bohemian Paradise and Máchův kraj.
When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide on your preferred focus: mountain forests and peat bogs, châteaux and museums, a lake landscape or a combination of several experience areas. The Lusatian Mountains are crossed by the European long-distance hiking trails E10 and E3. In the Bohemian Paradise, there are ski areas and cross-country skiing trails when suitable winter conditions prevail. You can then explore the individual regional districts in greater detail: Liberec District, Semily District, Česká Lípa District, Jablonec nad Nisou District.
