Between Literary History and Mountain Landscapes

Světlá pod Ještědem lies on the southern slope of the Ještědsko-kozákovský hřbet. The municipality's terrain ranges from 400 to 1,012 metres above sea level. This means that different elevations meet here in a landscape that can be explored not only through its views, but also through its cultural traces. Following in the Footsteps of Karolina Světlá

Karolina Světlá lived with her husband Petr Mužák in Světlá pod Ještědem from 1853 to 1865. The municipality also gave the writer her pseudonym. Her literary legacy is present in the Podještědí landscape: the “In the Footsteps of Karolina Světlá” educational trail was created by the Stopy v krajině association so that the general public could perceive literary and historical traces. The route thus combines a walk with a regional connection to the writer.

The circular “Cesta Karolíny Světlé” route is marked in green and leads several times to places where the plot of one of her works is set. The route is also suitable for parents with children; at several points, it is possible to return to the starting point. These features make flexible planning easier: the route can be adapted to your own pace without losing its literary focus. Anyone who does not want to complete the entire loop at once will find several ways to return to the starting point.

Village Square, St. Nicholas Church and Historic Buildings

The guided tour “Vesnice s příběhem” leads across the village square and to the Church of St. Nicholas in Světlá pod Ještědem. It conveys interesting local stories. The route is short and also suitable for visitors with limited mobility. It therefore offers an accessible introduction to the history of the village. The brick Church of St. Nicholas dates from 1643 and provides a specific historical reference point within this tour.

Another cultural landmark is Antošův statek, which is now associated with Hostinec U Richtrů. The building dates from 1835 and is the setting of the novel “Vesnický román”. Together with the village square, St. Nicholas Church and the trails following in Karolina Světlá's footsteps, it forms an excursion programme in which local history and literature meet within a closely connected thematic area. Every year around the transition from May to June, the municipality also hosts the Karoliny Světlé open-air festival.

Hiking, Cycling and Discovering Nature

Světlá pod Ještědem offers terrain for hiking and cycling. The “Ještědské vápence” educational trail begins at the Světlá pod Ještědem, Rozstání, dolní ves bus stop. This specific starting point makes orientation easier when planning an excursion and complements the literary-themed trails with another aspect of the landscape. Visitors can therefore choose between short explorations of cultural history and active routes through the terrain. The far-reaching views across up to one third of Bohemia add another scenic highlight.
