Radimovice – Culture, Landscapes and Discoveries

Radimovice combines technical monuments, historical traditions and a diverse landscape along the Mohelka. Particularly notable are the railway tunnel on the route between Pardubice and Liberec, the Sychrovský Viaduct and the nearby state-owned Sychrov Chateau. This creates a destination where culture, festivals, nature observation and cycling can be combined into a variety of travel ideas.

Technical Structures and Historical Traces

The railway tunnel beneath Radimovice was excavated between 1856 and 1858 and is 676 metres long. Its location on the route between Pardubice and Liberec makes it a tangible testament to the region’s railway history. The Sychrovský Viaduct lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Radimovice, is 120 metres long and 11.5 metres wide. It rises 32 metres above the Mohelka Valley, clearly illustrating the dimensions of historic transport structures. The cultural landscape also includes sandstone statues of Saint Lawrence, Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Florian dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The statue of Saint Barbara stands on a hilltop overlooking Radimovice and the surrounding landscape. The state-owned Sychrov Chateau is located in the immediate vicinity. Vila Zelenka is also part of the area’s history: it was built as the first recreational or holiday house in the surroundings of Sychrov Chateau and served this purpose there in the following years.

Festivals with a Regional Character

The Masopust carnival in Radimovice is the municipality’s largest cultural event and includes a masked procession. Visitors can take part in a competition for the best carnival doughnuts and sample traditional carnival specialities. The festival thus combines local customs with a specific culinary experience. The Sychrovská pouť pilgrimage festival has been mentioned since the 19th century and has taken place on the first Sunday in September since 1920. Market stalls and fairground rides extend along Radimovice’s main road.

The Mohelka, Beech Slopes and Birdlife

The middle course of the Mohelka is a transitional section between a mountain river and a lowland river and is known as the “grayling zone”. Brown trout, grayling and bullhead are found in this zone. Kingfishers, grey wagtails and white-throated dippers are also relatively common along the grayling zone. More than 150 bird species have been recorded in Radimovice. Another aspect of the landscape can be found on the steep slopes around the Mohelka. Relatively well-preserved beech stands grow on the steep northern slopes above the river. In early spring, the remnants of beech stands on the steep slopes display a visible spring aspect, with flowering plants in the undergrowth. Below the summit of Hrobka lies a body of water covering approximately two hectares, referred to as “Světský rybník” on some maps. It has no inflow and is fed exclusively by rain and snowfall. Mallards, coots, the non-native Egyptian goose and reed warblers regularly breed there.
