St. Michael’s Church and an 1835 Cross

The Church of the Holy Archangel Michael in Bulovka is recorded in the Frýdlant Urbarium of 1381 and is one of the municipality’s most important local sights. A cross stands by the church behind the churchyard enclosure, on a sandstone pedestal. It was erected in 1835 from a bequest by Christoph Elstner. The precise location and preserved date make the cross a distinct detail when visiting the church grounds, rather than merely being perceived as part of the area’s general history.

History in Dolní Oldřiš

In Dolní Oldřiš, St. Martin’s Church continues the cultural heritage trail. A gravestone of the knight Abraham von Eberhard from 1612 has been preserved there. The building is used as a permanent exhibition hall and community museum; access is possible by prior arrangement. Monthly piano concerts were also regularly held there. This use complements the historic furnishings with a cultural venue, while the concerts should be understood as past events.

Traditional construction is also represented in Dolní Oldřiš: House No. 3 is an example of a traditional Upper Lusatian house from the Bohemian-German border region. A water castle is said to have stood beside the former farmyard. This wording refers to a traditional historical attribution and not to a castle complex visible today.

Mills and Evidence of Everyday Life

The Horní Mill has been documented since 1591 and was used to grind grain. Another preserved piece of evidence stands on the Světlý potok near the Polish border: a mill is still preserved there as House No. 39. Both references draw attention to the former everyday use of water and buildings, without implying that a mill is operating there today.

Hiking and Cycling Around Bulovka

For active exploration, there is a yellow-marked KČT hiking trail that branches off over Mount Vyhlídka in the direction of Dolní Řasnice. Another option for orientation is cycle route 3006 from Stráž nad Nisou to Filipovka. It runs through the Bulovka area, including along paths outside the built-up areas of Dolní Oldřiš and Bulovka.
