Bílý Potok – Nature, Industrial History and Trails

Bílý Potok is a destination where nature experiences, physical activity and preserved evidence of the town’s history stand closely side by side. Between beech forests, a short exercise trail, historic buildings and craft culture, the town presents a diverse picture. If you are looking for a combination of landscapes, short excursions and tangible discoveries during your stay, Bílý Potok offers several different starting points for this.

Nature, Exercise and the HUP-HOP Trail

An unusual experience is the HUP-HOP trail in Bílý Potok. It is 500 metres long, free of charge and open to everyone. Along the trail are eleven pieces of equipment for stretching and strength exercises, as well as additional facilities. This means the trail can be incorporated into a stay as a self-contained exercise activity, without requiring an extensive sports plan.

The HUP-HOP trail connects the Jizerky recreation centre with the Hubertka tourist lodge, located in the forests. It can also be combined with a walk to the nearby Kočičí kameny rock viewpoint. The Hubertka lodge is situated in the beech forests of the Jizera Mountains at a crossroads of hiking trails east of Lázně Libverda and north of Bílý Potok, on the slopes of Smrk (1,124 m). Because of its proximity to Singltrek pod Smrkem, it is frequently visited by cyclists; in winter, it is mainly visited by cross-country skiers. Around Bílý Potok, this creates several ways to explore the landscape, from a short trail with exercise stations to a forest excursion destination.

Protected Landscape and Historical Traces

The Jizerskohorské bučiny National Nature Reserve also covers the cadastral area of Bílý Potok pod Smrkem. The reserve protects a mixed forest complex consisting predominantly of beech, with geomorphologically significant formations, meaning distinctive landforms, as well as preserved natural or near-natural plant and animal communities. This connection with the landscape is particularly interesting when choosing where to stay if you want to get to know not only individual attractions but also the character of a protected forest area.

Another side of the town is represented by the Jizerskohorské technické muzeum. It is located in the former Karl Bienert Jr. waste-spinning mill, an exceptionally well-preserved factory complex with numerous authentic structures and installations from the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

Church, Crafts and Railway

The Church of the Holy Trinity is also one of Bílý Potok’s defining historical landmarks. It was built from 1888 to 1890 and consecrated on 28 September 1890. The church is designed in the pseudo-Romanesque style and has two stained-glass windows. Since 21 December 1998, it has been listed in the Czech register of cultural monuments. This makes it possible to trace the town’s history through a single building, considering its construction period, style and heritage status.

A more contemporary craft stop is Keramika Strunovi. In Bílý Potok, it operates a studio, a small exhibition hall, a garden gallery and a shop under one roof. For a stay involving different interests, this place therefore provides a cultural counterpoint to forest trails, viewpoints and industrial history.

The railway line from Raspenava to Bílý Potok is also part of the area’s historical context. It began public service on 3 May 1900 and originally had five stations, all of which are still preserved today. Bílý Potok pod Smrkem railway station was built from 1899 to 1900. Its main building and two-track locomotive shed are today preserved in an almost original condition; the station is now located in the cadastral area of Hejnice. The preserved railway infrastructure forms another clearly distinct facet of the town: Bílý Potok can be discovered not only through nature and excursions but also through its railway heritage.
