Janův Důl – Source of the Ploučnice, Forests and Culture

Janův Důl is a destination for anyone wishing to combine their stay with landscape experiences, marked trails and small cultural discoveries. Between meadows, hills and dense forests lie special natural sites as well as a historic chapel, an annual pilgrimage and quiet memorial sites. This allows the area to be explored in very different ways depending on your interests.

Landscape with distinctive basalt

A prominent natural monument in the surrounding area is the nearby Čertova zeď between Český Dub and Osečná. The national nature monument protects a horizontally layered basalt dike several kilometres long. Its unusual geological structure forms a clear contrast with the extensive meadows, hills and dense forests surrounding Janův Důl.

From Činkův kopec, there are views of Janův Důl and Osečná, as well as Ralsko in the distance. The viewpoint combines views of the two nearby places with a long-distance view towards Ralsko. The panorama therefore extends from the immediate surroundings to the wider landscape.

Around the source of the Ploučnice

Jenišovský rybník pond lies directly at the source of the Ploučnice and is used for fishing. The K pramenům nature trail is also located near the source. The source forms the notional starting point of the Ploučnice cycling route, while a red-marked hiking trail leads to it.

Several hiking trails and marked paths also lead through Janův Důl and its surroundings. In addition to the path to the source, there are routes through the village and the surrounding landscape.

Chapel, pilgrimage and small monuments

The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk is part of the local history. It dates from 1796, was recently renovated and is located in the grounds of Camping 2000. The chapel also serves as a venue for social events. The Svatojánská pouť pilgrimage is celebrated there every year towards the end of June, meaning that the religious site is also connected with a recurring local tradition.

Further small reminders in the village and its surroundings complete this picture. In the lower part of Janův Důl, a memorial cross stands in front of house no. 20. In Zadní Ves, a stone wayside shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands beside a path and is known as “U obrázku”. Such individual stops add a cultural dimension to a walk or exploration alongside the landscape.
