Fojtka: Reservoir and Nature in the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area

Fojtka combines water, protected landscapes and paths with remarkably diverse nature. The whole of Fojtka lies within the Jizera Mountains Protected Landscape Area. In addition, there is the Fojtka Reservoir, a cycling route with a direct connection to another route, and the Fojtecký mokřad natural monument. When you choose accommodation in Fojtka for your trip, you can combine different focuses: a day by the water, a cycling trip, nature observation or excursions to regional cultural sites.

Reservoir and Wetlands

The Fojtka Reservoir lies on the Fojtka stream on the boundary between Mníšek and Fojtka. Its dam is made of rubble masonry and is 146 metres long. On summer days, the reservoir is used for swimming. This makes it a specific destination for trip planning that aims to combine landscapes and water, without requiring every day to have the same character.

The Fojtecký mokřad natural monument offers a different view of the landscape. It protects high-quality wetland vegetation with frequent occurrences of the specially protected species vachty trojlisté, as well as zábělník bahenní, a species listed in the Red List. The protected area also includes an adjacent wet meadow where the specially protected species prstnatec májový and listenatý occur. Protected plant species are therefore part of the natural environment around Fojtka.

Cycling Route, Paths and Mountains

The “U medvěda” cycling route connects Krásná Studánka with Fojtka and joins cycling route 3006 directly in Fojtka. For orientation when planning a day, this specific route connection is more helpful than a general description of the area. Another connection is provided by Žulovou stezkou: it leads past the lower crossroads of Fojtka and a former granite quarry. The Fojtka Reservoir is one of the sights along Žulovou stezkou.

Several mountains also provide different points of reference in the surrounding area. Ostrý and Brdo are mountains in the vicinity of Fojtka. Kančí vrch and Ptači vrchy are located in the surrounding area. Dračí vrch is 675 metres high and is a viewpoint. If you would like to alternate between water, paths and elevated destinations during your trip, you will find various themes for planning in the surrounding area.

Cultural Sites in the Wider Area

The wider region around Fojtka contains several destinations with different characteristics. Czocha - Zamek XIVw. is a castle, while Kraftwerk Hagenwerder is a ruin. Kaple Nejsvětější Trojice and Valdštejn are churches. These destinations expand Fojtka’s connection with nature and water to include regional architectural and historical traces. When choosing your accommodation, this mainly means making a clear decision about your preferred focus: should Fojtka remain a place for landscapes and paths, or should the trip also include cultural sites in the wider area?
