Chrastava Between History and Discovery

Chrastava combines urban history, technical monuments and routes with clearly specified distances. If you would like to combine culture and activity, you will find various starting points for planning your trip in and around Chrastava. The Městské muzeum presents visitors with the older and more recent history of Chrastava and its surroundings. The Městské muzeum includes a mini-gallery with regularly changing exhibitions.

The Chrastavské sklepení presents the history of Chrastava and local legends in a hand-painted exhibition. The Vodní náhon water channel provides another historical highlight: the water channel and the associated area of the old mill were designated immovable monuments in 2013. In 2021, a new visitor exhibition was set up in the former area of an old mill at the Vodní náhon site. The site is freely accessible; visitors can obtain the key at the information centre against a deposit of CZK 100.

Museums and Buildings with Their Own Character

The Muzeum historické hasičské techniky displays hand-operated and motorised fire pumps and is considered the second-largest museum of its kind in the Czech Republic. Its collection includes a wooden fire pump from 1778. The museum is located on Bílokostelecká Street in T.-G.-Masaryk Park. Führichův dům was built in 1802 and is a state-protected half-timbered monument. The second floor houses a small museum about the life and work of Josef Führich. The Church of St. Lawrence is a Neo-Gothic building on a low hill above Chrastava and houses an original organ. Chrastava also has an Art Nouveau metal bridge over the Jeřice, which is considered a state-protected technical monument. In the centre of the square stands a Baroque sandstone fountain from 1707; nearby is a Baroque Marian column (plague column) from 1732.

Cycling and Hiking with Fixed Distances

The “PROJÍŽĎKA po památkách CHRASTAVY” cycling tour is an easy bike ride just under 8 km long. The cycling route from Chrastava to Kryštofovo Údolí is 9 km long, or 21 km as a circular route returning to Chrastava. It follows cycling routes 14, 20 and 21 to the area below the ruins of Hamrštejn Castle. The stated distances help you compare the two cycling options. The third stage of the Stezka Českem in the Liberec area begins at Chrastava railway station. In the immediate vicinity of Chrastava, the hand-operated transbordeur crosses the Lusatian Neisse and is accessible year-round. Výhledy also has a birdwatching lookout point in the immediate vicinity. At Hamrštejn, the perimeter wall, the remains of two towers and the walls of the residential building are still preserved. The castle ruins are located 200 metres uphill along a forest path from Machnín Hrad railway station.
