Svijany – Culture, Brewing Tradition and Trails
Svijany combines castle history, brewing tradition and short routes through the village with regional opportunities for cycling and walking. This makes it possible to choose between culture, culinary discovery, places of remembrance and activities in the wider area during your stay.
Castle History and Archaeological Discoveries
The publicly accessible Zámek Svijany offers exhibitions on archaeology, the history of the castle and its surroundings, the history of brewing, the underground areas and the castle chapel. Particularly vivid are the archaeological exhibition from the Bronze Age, featuring a bronze hoard, and the exhibition on the Neolithic period and Eduard Štorch. A visit is therefore not only about the rooms of a castle, but also about traces of different eras and the history of the region.
From May to October, Zámek Svijany offers two-hour night tours with archaeologist Mgr. Petr Brestovanský. The focus is on stories and archaeological discoveries. This type of tour provides a distinct experience compared with visiting the exhibitions and suits travellers who want to learn about historical topics not only through exhibits, but also through storytelling.
Brewing History and Insights into Production
The history of the Svijany Brewery began in 1564. The brewery uses the decoction mashing method with two mashes, typical of Czech beer. Those interested in regional traditions and production methods can take part in a public guided brewery tour lasting approximately 60 minutes. The brewing processes are shown during the tour; visitors can also taste unfiltered beer directly from a lager tank. This combines the history of the brewery with a concrete insight into modern production.
Educational Trail, Memorial Site and Exploring the Village
The První naučná stezka Svijany is an educational trail with six stations and a length of up to 0.5 km. It begins at the D10 underpass structure in the lower part of the municipality, leads through Svijany along the main road past Pivovar Svijany and Zámek Svijany, and ends at the upper edge of the village by the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The route therefore connects several notable points in the village along a short themed trail.
The educational trail also points to the Žabakor Nature Reserve in the nearby area, where rare bird species can be observed. The restored military cemetery in Svijany provides a different historical focus. It commemorates the events of the Prussian-Austrian War on 26 June 1866. The site includes four monuments and an entrance gate; it is a memorial site for residents and visitors.
Cycling in the Regional Area
For cyclists, the development of the Greenway Jizera in Svijany provides a concrete point of reference. On 2 October 2025, section F101.2 was opened there. It connects a previously completed route through the Kabeláčová Garden towards the main road and forms a middle section of the connection between the municipalities and the local cycling routes.
In the wider regional area around Svijany, the Greenway Jizera runs along the Jizera River. It is suitable for cyclists, pedestrians and families, connects natural landscapes with cultural monuments and offers activities for visitors of different age groups. When choosing accommodation in Svijany, you can therefore tailor your stay to your preferred focus: the castle and brewery represent culture and regional tradition, the educational trail offers a short exploration of the village, while the Greenway Jizera opens up a view of a larger network of nature and cultural experiences.
