Teplice District – Mining Culture, Spa Tradition and Landscape Experiences
A region between spa town, mining and mountains
Teplice District combines several travel ideas within a compact regional area: the traditional spa town of Teplice, important castles and monasteries, the UNESCO-influenced mining landscape of Krupka, and winter activities in the Ore Mountains. Lázně Teplice is considered the oldest spa in Central Europe; its tradition dates back to the 12th century. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether you are primarily looking for culture and urban history, mining history, or nature and winter experiences.
Teplice v Čechách railway station serves national and international passenger traffic, including services with reservation documents. It is located on railway lines connecting Lovosice, Děčín, Kadaň předměstí, Ústí nad Labem and Litvínov.
Castles, Monastery and Urban History
The Cistercian monastery in Osek serves as a cultural and tourism center and has been a national cultural monument since 1995. Duchcov Chateau also brings together several historical layers: the chateau is a national cultural monument and is associated with the Valdštejn family and Giacomo Casanova. The visitor route at Teplice Chateau leads through a courtyard with a Romanesque exhibition containing the mortal remains of Queen Judith. The remains of a Romanesque basilica with a preserved crypt can also be seen there.
Teplice's historical urban character also includes the architecturally and historically significant pedestrian zone Lázeňská ulička. At the Tvořivá dílna Mýdlárny u Zámku in Teplice, visitors make their own soap; additional courses are also offered there.
Mining Landscape and Mining Museum in Krupka
Hornická krajina Krupka has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. Krupka is considered one of the oldest tin deposits in Central Europe; tin mining lasted for 800 years. The mining landscape preserves numerous mine workings from the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. In the Knötel mining district, the Večerní hvězda, Václav, Barbora and Prokop adits stand as protected cultural monuments representing this long history.
The subject becomes particularly tangible at the year-round mining museum in the Starý Martin adit. The exhibition includes mining technology, minerals, lamps, respiratory protection equipment, tools and mining vehicles. The Infocentrum Hornické krajiny Krupka is also the starting point for the Po stopách horníků educational trail. Below Komáří vížka there is also the Velká pinka subsidence hollow created by mining, which is up to 75 meters deep.
Trails, Views and Botanical Discoveries
For a landscape perspective, the route to Stropník passes by Dušanova vyhlídka. From there, the view extends toward České středohoří and over Osek, Duchcov and Teplice. In the Osek area, a red-marked hiking trail continues toward Rýzmburk Castle and the trail junction below Stropník. In 1857, a refreshment establishment was added to the original stone tower at Komáří vížka.
The Botanical Garden Teplice offers another form of nature observation. It is considered the only botanical garden in the Ústí nad Labem Region and displays, among others, the distinctive plants Afrocarpus gracilior, Encephalartos villosus and Dasylirion serratifolium. The garden thus complements excursions into the mountain landscape with a place where special plant species take center stage.
Winter Activities at Bouřňák, Mikulov and Nové Město
Bouřňák has six pistes, including the Údolíčko children's slope. Mikulov and Nové Město are home to three ski resorts in total.
