Srbice between Water Landscape and Local History

Srbice combines a documented local history with water landscapes, traces of mining and village traditions. The first documented mention of Srbice dates from 1403. For a trip with varied interests, the village therefore offers several points of connection: observing nature by the water, exploring historical questions about the development of the village and gaining insights into customs reflected in specific events. Those who are not looking for just one attraction can get to know Srbice through these different themes.

Modlanský Pond and Modlany Reservoir

The Modlanský Pond plays a special role. The pond and its surroundings are home to specially protected animal species, including the black-crowned night heron, great crested grebe, common nightingale, corn bunting, common swift and sand lizard. A second water landscape is formed by the artificial body of water of the Modlany Reservoir on the Modlanský Stream. It is a significant landscape phenomenon within the administrative area of Srbice. The two water areas differ in their main focus: at the pond, wildlife takes centre stage, while at the reservoir, the artificial body of water as a landscape feature is the focus.

Traces of Mining

Srbice can also be explored through its industrial and mining history. The coal mines in Srbice employed around 600 miners in the first half of the 20th century. The older name Řeřevice is probably connected with near-surface coal seams that could frequently catch fire at their outcrops. The settlement originally undermined by mining has disappeared; the place names Staré Srbice and Nové Srbice are still used today. As a result, not only preserved landscapes but also vanished settlement structures form part of the local history. Road traffic and the nearby railway connection accelerated the industrial and mining development of Srbice. Those viewing the village from a historical perspective will therefore find a connection here between raw materials, settlement and transport.

Recreation and Village Traditions

The recreation zone already established in Nové Srbice offers opportunities for short-term daily recreation. Recreational development in Srbice is supported, among other things, by designated cycling routes and purpose-specific paths. This makes it possible to take different priorities into account when planning: a short recreational outing in Nové Srbice or an activity involving cycling routes and other designated paths. The maypole is also part of the village tradition. The Srbice Volunteer Fire Brigade revived the tradition of erecting a maypole on the village square by the chapel after several years. On 30 April 2019, the volunteer fire brigades from Srbice held a witch-burning festival for children from Srbice and the surrounding area. The village square by the chapel and the children's festival give the traditions a concrete social and local setting.
