Bořislav: Culture and Landscape in České středohoří

Bořislav lies in the České středohoří Protected Landscape Area and extends as an Old Slavic settlement across a hilly, dramatically shaped landscape on a slope. This creates a destination where historical traces and a distinctive landscape come together directly as a range of different discoveries.

Culture and History in the Village Landscape

Among the state-protected monuments in Bořislav is Kostel sv. Kateřiny. The present building was constructed in 1717 and restored in 1820; the church originally dates back to 1384. The building has a single nave and a rectangular layout, with a separated presbytery and a sacristy adjoining it on the southern side. Its imposing bell tower also makes Kostel sv. Kateřiny a distinctive landmark on the E55 long-distance route between Teplice and Lovosice.

The historic village landscape also includes the Baroque parish house of Bořislav. The two-storey building dates from 1733 and has a mansard roof. On the main road in the municipality stands a Baroque sandstone column with a Pietà in its original location. It dates from 1720, has a Corinthian capital, and bears a small sculpture of the Bohosudov Pietà.

On the village square, the stone Calvary cross from 1801 commemorates another facet of the village’s history. The Calvary monument depicts Christ crucified and Mary Magdalene, as well as a skull with a snake winding through it. If you and your family would like to discover historical details not only indoors but directly in the village landscape, these monuments each provide their own points of reference for exploration.

Route to Milešovka and Cycling Routes

The Cesta přátelství leads from Bořislav and Černčice to Bílka and then continues jointly to the foot of Milešovka. The route is also a sculpture trail with 14 modern sculptures created by Czech and German sculptors. It therefore combines a specific route with contemporary art and creates a distinctive focus for planning an outing. When planning your day, you can consequently choose to focus on the route itself or on viewing the sculptures.

The municipality of Bořislav also provides its own information for cycling. The document “cyklotrasy-okolo-borislavi.pdf” concerns cycling routes around Bořislav. The document “borislav-lovosice.pdf” covers a cycling route between Bořislav and Lovosice. When looking for accommodation in Bořislav, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus more on the monuments in the village, the Cesta přátelství, or the cycling connections described. The decision can remain focused on the specific experiences you would like to include in your plans.
