Jeníkov – Culture, Mountains and Special Excursion Destinations
Jeníkov combines an engaging local history with various options for planning your trip: historic buildings, an online exhibition, golf training and the Barbora Reservoir are complemented by mountains, ruins and other destinations in the surrounding region.
Historical Traces and Local History
A particular highlight of the town’s history is today’s Church of Saints Peter and Paul. It replaced an older building that had been constructed in 1551 and burned down in 1756. A statue of Saint Salvator stands below the church. The work dates from the first half of the 18th century and adds to the historic character of the church area.
The church and the statue thus bring together architectural history and sculpture: the church building points to an earlier predecessor, while the work of Saint Salvator adds a detail from the 18th century to the area.
A chapel in Jeníkov also preserves a remarkable detail: its reused sandstone portal features finely crafted yet damaged relief decoration. The finely worked relief invites closer inspection, while the online exhibition traces Jeníkov’s development beyond the individual building. Those who want to learn about the town not only through its buildings but also through its development will find another gateway to its history in the online exhibition “Jeníkov v proměnách času”.
The two approaches to local history emphasize different aspects: the portal draws attention to craftsmanship details, while the online exhibition focuses on Jeníkov’s development over time.
Mountains, Ruins and Regional Excursion Destinations
Several prominent mountains lie around Jeníkov: Stropnik, Bouřňák, Vlčí hora and Mount Bořeň [Bílina-Újezd]. The ruins of Kysperk Castle and Sukoslav are also located in the vicinity of Jeníkov. For an excursion, you can therefore choose between prominent natural landmarks and the traces of former castles, without reducing both themes to a single experience.
Osek Monastery is located close to Jeníkov. The Wildpark Osterzgebirge zoo is also situated in the wider surrounding region. These different destinations expand the choice between religious history, ruins and an outing focused on animals and nature.
Golf and Water at the Barbora Reservoir
Jeníkov offers specific places for golf. The Golf Resort Barbora training facility includes a 280 m long driving range, a putting green and a pitching area. The three areas each focus on a different aspect of golf training. The Golfová akademie Martina Kovaříka is also located in Jeníkov, Oldřichov 226, 417 24 Oldřichov u Duchcova.
The Barbora Reservoir is used for training sport divers.
