Muschelberg: Ski Resort, Mining History and Trails in the Ore Mountains

If you would like to combine winter sports, mining history and trails in the Ore Mountains during your trip, you will find various options for active and cultural days. Between ski lifts, historic buildings, a cross-border educational trail and a viewpoint, you can put together different ideas for each day. The possibilities range from active hours on Bouřňák to cultural discoveries underground.

Winter Sports and Summer Trails on Bouřňák

Mikulov has a local ski area with six downhill runs and cross-country ski trails. Two ski lifts also lead from Mikulov to Bouřňák. The Sport Centrum Bouřňák ski area is located in the territory of the municipalities of Mikulov, Nové Město and Moldava in the Ore Mountains. The six downhill runs and the cross-country ski trails constitute two different winter sports options. In summer, there are marked trails for hiking. The Krušnohorská magistrála can also be used for cycling in the area of Sport Centrum Bouřňák. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore weigh up whether you prefer a stay focused on winter sports or a trip with days spent hiking or cycling.

Mining History and Protected Monuments

The history of the place is closely connected with mining. In the area of present-day Mikulov, the mining settlement of Neu Schellenberg probably already existed at the beginning of the 15th century, in the years 1404 and 1410. The mining history thus connects an early settlement from the beginning of the 15th century with the Lehnschafter adit, one of the oldest parts of the mine. Three prepared underground tours are available in the Lehnschafter adit, each lasting one to two hours. The tours are suitable as a standalone underground visit or as a clearly defined part of a varied day.

You will also find notable evidence of the past above ground. The parish church of Saint Nicholas, the holy bishop, was built at the beginning of the 18th century on the foundations of a damaged older church. St. Nicholas Church is a late Baroque sacred building and has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since June 6, 2002. The Mikulovský Tunnel is also a cultural monument. The Most–Moldava railway line runs through Mikulov and has been a cultural monument of the Czech Republic there since 1998.

Educational Trail, Viewpoint and Orientation Locally

The cross-border Rehefeld/Moldava educational trail provides information on the history and nature of the Czech-German border region at 16 information boards. You can start it at any point and walk it in either direction. The educational trail is not tied to a fixed starting point or a single direction of travel. In the vicinity of Mikulov, Vlčí kámen is a viewpoint overlooking the valley. The hiking route from Mikulov to Vlčí kámen starts at the car park below the ski slope.
