Rtyně nad Bílinou: Church, Festivals and the Paradies Site

As early as Saturday, 1 July 2023, the Rtyňské slavnosti were held as a jubilee event marking the 20th edition and the municipality’s 690th anniversary, covering the period from 1333 to 2023. Before that, the celebrations had been suspended for three years. Thus, the individual editions have not only different years but also their own historical references: in 2023, the event anniversary was linked with the municipality’s anniversary, while the subsequently scheduled dates continued the series.

ChotynÄ› and the Paradies Site

South of Rtyně nad Bílinou, the Paradies site lies on Chotyně Hill, a castle or hillfort site dating from the 15th century. The remains are associated with Paradies Castle, which was probably built there at the beginning of the 15th century. This cautious wording is part of the historical classification: it is not a fully preserved castle, but a site whose remains are associated with this castle.

At the Paradies site, traces of the original buildings and a ditch on the southern side of the hill are visible. These surviving traces make the site an example of how medieval history can be explored even without fully preserved building structures. Together with St. Martin’s Church and the Rtyňské slavnosti, they create a varied picture combining architecture, remembrance, festival tradition and landscape history.
