A local history shaped by mining and glassmaking
Újezdeček was formerly called Malý Újezd. Lignite mining began in the cadastral area in 1880. In the second half of the 19th century, mining and glassmaking led to a sharp increase in the population. The year 1880 establishes when lignite mining began; the population growth also shows the broader impact of both industries.
The industrial history includes two glassworks producing different products: the Fischman Glassworks made bottles and costume jewellery glass, while the Ascher Glassworks made flat glass. Both works later closed. Their product ranges differed: Fischman’s bottles and costume jewellery glass contrasted with the flat glass made at the Ascher Glassworks.
The character of the settlement was also shaped by mining and its direct connection to Teplice, particularly in the area of public infrastructure. Újezdeček’s land-use plan provides for preserving the Dukla settlement as an integral part of the municipality’s history and as a residential complex of urban planning value, with a central square.
Townscape, memorial and views
Architectural traces in Újezdeček include the remains of old farmsteads, old stone walls on buildings and renovated entrance gates. The memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands on náměstí Boženy Němcové.
From the village square, you can see Milešovka and the more distant Kletečná. Újezdeček also offers views of the Ore Mountains. The view from the village square can therefore be associated with two specific mountains, while the view of the Ore Mountains adds a broader landscape perspective.
