An unmarked 300-metre detour leads from the Březina educational trail to Kostomlaty Castle. A marked 500-metre detour leads to Vojenský rybník. The two detours lead to different destinations and also differ in whether they are marked. At 300 and 500 metres respectively, you can include the detours separately when planning your hike.

Landscape and the Březina Protected Area

The Březina Natura 2000 site includes different landscape forms: a pond, a meadow on a basalt plateau, old beech stands on the eastern slopes and a small peat bog. The landscape therefore ranges from water and open meadow to wooded slopes and wetland. The great crested newt is also designated as a protected feature of the Březina Natura 2000 site. Observing the animal is not a prerequisite.

Access to the Nature Reserve

Ruins, Observation Tower and Pilgrimage Site

The ruins of Kostomlaty Castle offer views of the surrounding landscape. The castle keep now serves as an observation tower. Historically, the castle was founded around 1300 by the Lords of Rýzmburk. The castle’s foundation, ruins and observation tower thus connect different periods, which you can consider side by side when exploring the site.

Another historical point of interest is the Chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. It was built in 1825 at a pilgrimage site that had existed since the 18th century. A spring rises behind the altar and is channelled into an adjacent spring protection area above the well. This detail complements the building’s history with a specific connection to the water at the chapel site.
