Měrunice: Landscape, History and Special Discoveries

Hills, Volcanic Landscape and Granátka

The southern backdrop of Měrunice is formed by Vraník and other hills on the horizon. To the southwest, the rounded Dobský hřbet ridge defines and clearly separates the landscape around Žichov and Měrunice. As a result, the area has clearly recognizable landscape features that become noticeable even when finding your way around the village.

One special destination in the local landscape is Granátka, a small hill about 300 m south of Měrunice. Granátka was a volcano toward the end of the Tertiary period. Opalescent serpentinites still occur there today; because of their characteristic color, they are referred to as garnets. This geological connection gives the surroundings a detail that goes beyond a general description of the landscape and also offers curious family members a discovery of their own.

Church, Fortifications and Local History

One of the most valuable sights in Měrunice is the Church of St. Stanislav. Martin Vchyňský was the church’s patron in 1386. Today, it is an important cultural monument. This makes it a specific place in Měrunice where the village’s religious and historical character can be understood.

Further historical traces can be found in the immediate vicinity of the village. Tvrziště Žichov is located north of Žichov, near the Lužice II reservoir, on a flat spur. This spur is bordered by the body of water and the Žichovský potok stream. Tvrziště Žichov is a fortification from the 13th century and was first mentioned in 1239. Its position on the flat spur and the boundaries formed by the water and stream give the site a clearly defined local setting.

The fortified manor house in Měrunice was also first mentioned in 1295 and remains part of a farmstead to this day. The community ball, held in 2024, 2025 and 2026, also represents the cultural side of the village. Měrunice therefore encompasses both older architectural remains and a recurring community event.
