Chomutov District

The Chomutov District brings together Ore Mountains landscapes, historic places and a variety of destinations. The Chomutov region encompasses natural attractions, churches and chapels, chateaux, castles, technical sights and traditional folk architecture. This makes the region ideal for a stay combining hiking, nature observation, culture and family-friendly discoveries.

Nature between valleys, moors and the Ore Mountains

Bezručovo údolí is a particularly diverse landscape area. The nature park in the Ore Mountains covers 6,500 hectares and ranges from approximately 380 to 850 metres above sea level. You can explore the valley on marked paths on foot or by bicycle. An almost seven-kilometre-long asphalt route leads through Bezručovo údolí to Třetí mlýn and is suitable for walkers, cyclists and inline skaters.

The trails in Údolí Prunéřovského potoka also reveal another side of the landscape. A blue hiking route runs there for just under eight kilometres. The route can be reached by car, bus, bicycle and, at weekends, also by the Chomutov–Vejprty railway line. The Kýšovický vodopád is another prominent natural landmark; it is considered the highest waterfall in the Ore Mountains.

In the protected Novodomské rašeliniště peat bog reserve, nature conservation and birdwatching go hand in hand: the area is also a bird protection area and a regular breeding ground for capercaillie. Hradiště u Černovic is known as a protected natural monument featuring Tertiary quartzite with plant fossils. Hradiště also preserves a 240-metre-long rampart of a Bronze Age hillfort. A yellow hiking trail leads there from Chomutov.

History, crafts and special places

The historic centre of Chomutov has been an urban heritage zone since 1992. In the museum complex, you can see the Church of St Catherine, a lookout tower, the town hall cellars and a monastery courtyard. The Městská věž serves both as an exhibition venue and a lookout tower. The Oblastní muzeum in Chomutov presents permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions on regional history; family activities, lectures and workshops complement the programme.

At Skanzen Stará Ves, you can gain an insight into earlier life in the Ore Mountains, including traditional crafts and horticulture. The open-air museum is characterised by a working Dutch-type windmill beside a small vineyard. Permanent exhibitions include bobbin lace-making, beekeeping, flax cultivation and processing, as well as the production of wooden toys. During the summer season, the open-air museum is open daily; admission is included with a valid zoo park ticket.

Further cultural highlights include Hasištejn Castle, with its restaurant, lookout tower and cultural events, as well as Chomutov’s farmers’ market, offering handmade ceramics and wooden products.

Water, animals and winter experiences

Kamencové jezero is an almost 16-hectare lake with alum water considered unique in the world. Facilities include beaches, mini-golf, rental boats, pedal boats and paddleboards; the lake is also used for cold-water swimming in a natural bathing environment. For a stay right by the lake, camping options include cabins as well as pitches for tents or caravans.

The Podkrušnohorský zoopark Chomutov covers 112 hectares and showcases around 160 animal species from the Palearctic region. Together with the family activities at the museum and the children’s ski park at Skiareál Pyšná, this creates a range of options for active and varied days. Skiareál Pyšná has three slopes, a ski school, a children’s ski park, a snow park and a groomed cross-country ski trail.
