Iron Ore, Blast Furnace and Baroque Church

The origins of Kovářská are connected with the mining and processing of iron ore. Historically, five ironworks were located within the present-day municipality. This development is particularly vividly illustrated by the blast furnace: in 1599, a true blast furnace was built in Kovářská, one of the first in Bohemia. You will also encounter the former ironworks on the Mrtvou cestou na Vápenku walking trail, which passes by its remains.

An important cultural site in the town is the Baroque Church of St. Michael, built in 1709–1710. It has a coffered ceiling decorated with images of saints. In front of the church stands a Baroque Marian column dating from 1706. Together with the industrial history, this creates a townscape where sacred art and the former processing of mineral resources meet.

Museum and Historical Memorial Sites

The Museum of the Air Battle over the Ore Mountains in Kovářská commemorates airmen of all nationalities who lost their lives over the Czech lands and Germany in one of the fiercest air battles of the Second World War. A display case provides information about Lt. Raine’s crew and aircraft. The exhibition thus presents a distinct focus alongside the town’s older history.

Further historical points of interest can be found along the paths through the town. The Chapel of St. Mark was built in 1913 near an iron cross dating from 1871. The Švédský hrob memorial stands beside the road shortly after Kovářská railway station.

Walking and Winter Routes

Kovářská railway station on the Chomutov–Vejprty line serves as the starting point for the Tři Špičáky route. The route leads to a stone organ formation and to Velký Špičák, offering impressive panoramic views. A shorter way to combine the town with its industrial history is the Mrtvou cestou na Vápenku walking trail. It begins in Kovářská’s market square and passes by the remains of the former ironworks.

For cross-country skiing, there is a maintained 12.5 km circular trail around Kovářská. Sjezdovka Kovářská is a 350 m ski slope with a lift. This allows you to take different priorities into account when planning your accommodation: your stay can focus on local history and museums, walking trails and the landscape, or winter sports.

Exploring by Bike

The Krušnohorské oko gravel route begins in Kovářská and passes by the railway station and the former lime kiln. In Háj u Loučné pod Klínovcem, you will also find Vápenka, which was completely restored in 2019 and is now open to the public.
