Compared with the Romanesque church in Želina, the castle represents a later architectural period and extends the historical perspective beyond the Middle Ages.

Sluňáky: protected quartzite blocks

Sluňáky has been designated a natural monument since 1966. The natural monument protects quartzite blocks with a characteristically weathered surface; it is one of the last occurrences of quartzite blocks. Quartzite is an especially hard rock. The focus here is therefore on a characteristic geological feature and on how such landscape elements are preserved through their protected status.

Romanesque architectural history in Želina

The Church of St Lawrence in Želina was built in the first third of the 13th century. Since 1958, it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and is considered the oldest Romanesque building in the Chomutov area. The church also contains fragments of the Romanesque Church of St Gotthard dating from the first third of the 13th century. This makes it possible to trace both the building’s own period of origin and the older architectural heritage in a single structure.

River landscape and industrial heritage

The Želina Small Hydroelectric Power Station was put into operation at the beginning of the 20th century and is an industrial monument. It is located on the opposite bank of the Ohře and is recommended as a worthwhile excursion destination. The Želina Meander presents a different landscape character: it is a rocky meander in the canyon-like valley of the Ohře, with natural habitats occurring there.

A described route to the Church of St Lawrence

The Church of St Lawrence in Želina can be reached on foot from the Maxipsa Fíka riverside path in approximately 40 minutes. After crossing the river at the bridge near Špitálské předměstí, the route continues along the Ohře on a green-marked hiking trail.
