Všestudy – History Between Church, Memorial and Ponds

Všestudy is a destination for anyone seeking historical traces beyond the major cities while travelling through the Czech Republic. Ruins, a memorial, archaeological finds, old routes and two ponds of different sizes give visitors several themes to explore. The first written mention dates back to 1325. Všestudy can therefore be discovered as a destination with a long history.

Church Ruins and Protected Details

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Všestudy is a ruin. Inside, there is a walled-up Gothic portal arch. A Baroque stone cross stands beside the church and has been protected as a monument since 3 May 1958. In 2018, grilles were installed at the church entrances. These details belong together when you want to understand the site’s historic architecture: The ruins preserve visible traces of different periods, while the portal arch and the stone cross each add their own historical accents.

Memorial at the Northern Edge of the Village

A monument to the victims of the Second World War stands in a park at the entrance to Všestudy. It is referred to as a memorial to the liberation of 1939–1945. The monument was completed on 21 May 1925 and moved after 1945 to a park at the northern edge of the village. For finding your way around the village, not only the monument’s designation is important, but also its changing classification and its present connection with the park.

From the Bronze Age to Lignite Mining

Archaeological finds show that Všestudy and its surroundings were already inhabited during the Late Bronze Age by people of the Knovíz culture. The archaeological area includes prehistoric finds from the vicinity of the church as well as an urn burial discovered in the cadastral area. All of them are held in the collection of the Chomutov Museum. The village’s history also reaches back to the period of the Míšeňská trade route, along which Všestudy developed. This road connected the Chomutov area with Litoměřice. Since the 19th century, Všestudy has also been considered one of the oldest lignite-mining sites in the Chomutov area.

Ponds and Paths in the Surrounding Area

Two ponds are part of the village landscape. The pond on plot no. 68 covers 7,215 m², while the pond on plot no. 168 covers 1,316 m². North of Všestudy, the paths towards Strupčice and Okořín are unpaved.
