Veliká Ves can be explored through its water, architectural history and long period of settlement. The Dubá stream flows through the village and feeds two ponds on the village square; the Baroque Church of St. James, the castle and archaeological finds add to this multifaceted picture of the village.

Water and Village History

The Dubá flows through Veliká Ves and feeds two ponds on the village square, which lie on either side of the road. The village is located upstream of the confluence of the Dubá and Leská streams. The stream, the village-square ponds and the confluence give the landscape a distinct local character.

The stream also has a historical dimension: in the past, it powered a mill in Veliká Ves. Water is therefore part of both the landscape and the village’s former use. If you are interested in this connection, the Dubá provides a clear thread through the village’s history.

Church and Castle: Different Building Phases

The Church of St. James is an 18th-century Baroque building, constructed on the site of an earlier predecessor. Statues of St. John of Nepomuk and St. Augustine, both dating from 1773, stand in front of its west portal. The bell tower features two different timepieces: a sundial on the south side and the face of a mechanical clock on the east side. The portal figures and clocks are specific architectural details that go beyond the church’s general dating.

Veliká Ves Castle adds a different architectural history to the ecclesiastical focus. The Augustinians of Karlov built it between 1662 and 1762 as the provost’s summer residence. Between 1890 and 1896, it was remodelled in the Neo-Renaissance style. The term describes a later design inspired by Renaissance forms. The castle’s construction and its later remodelling can thus be understood as distinct historical phases.

Archaeological Traces and Local Traditions

Archaeological finds in the cadastral area of Veliká Ves attest to settlement throughout much of prehistory and the early historic period. The sand pit west of the village yielded the largest concentration of finds. Rescue excavations were carried out there in advance in 1974 and 1975. These traces of settlement extend the picture beyond the surviving architectural history.

The former cemetery gate is also part of the village’s history: the gate, dating from 1678, was converted into a war memorial. The Svatojakubská pilgrimage took place in 2006 and every year from 2015 to 2022. The castle’s former farmyard is now used for agritourism and various social events. If you would like to attend an event, check in advance with the venue about the specific attendance arrangements.

Getting There and Finding Accommodation

A local road from Chotěbudice connects Veliká Ves with the Kadaň–Podbořany highway. If you are travelling by car, you can take this road connection into account when planning your visit and accommodation.

For a stay focused on cultural history, Veliká Ves is an interesting destination to search for: the church, castle, archaeological past and former use of the stream to power a mill offer different ways to explore the village’s history. When looking for a hotel for this kind of trip, you can consider whether you would like to focus primarily on architectural history, traces of settlement, or the connection between water and the village’s history.
