Údlice: Sacred Architecture, Jewish History and Traces of Nature

Údlice brings together a distinctive sacred history, traces of Jewish culture and an unusual geological past. Church and castle as historical points of reference

The centre of the local sacred history is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Údlice. It was first mentioned in writing in 1247. The building has a Romanesque altar niche, or apse, whose construction is dated to before 1250. At the same time, the church is considered one of the most important sacred buildings in the Ústí nad Labem Region. This dating makes it a particularly vivid starting point if you would like to trace the long development of the town.

The historical record also includes the fact that the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the former cemetery were once fortified by a moat. Údlice Castle is joined by a farmyard and a small park. Jewish history in Údlice

Another focus is Jewish history. Údlice was one of the main centres of Jewish settlement in the Chomutov region. As early as the end of the 15th century, there was a Jewish house of prayer here with an attached religious school. The so-called old Jewish cemetery may date back to the 16th century; the oldest gravestones date from the 17th and 18th centuries.

In 1864, a second, so-called new Jewish cemetery was established in Údlice near the road to Jirkov. At the beginning of the 1960s, a memorial site was created at this cemetery for the victims of the death march who died in Údlice in 1945. Fossil traces and seasonal leisure

Between 2 and 65 million years ago, a river flowed through the site of present-day Údlice and emptied into the so-called Žatec Lake. This geological perspective complements the architectural and cultural history with a much older past of the landscape.
