Místo brings together the history of a small mining town, church architecture, and small monuments that tell the story of different centuries and local communities. Those interested in historical development and religious art will find tangible points of interest here. A hike starting in Vysoká Jedle and a planned cycling route project may also be worth considering when planning a trip.

From mining town to guild centre

Místo was founded as a mining town in the mid-16th century. The town took its name from the meadow where it was established: Placz. The first historical mention dates from 1569. The construction of a church in Místo is recorded in 1572. A parish was established as early as 1588, where a Protestant pastor held services.

Místo also became the centre of the collective guilds of the surrounding villages. The guilds of cloth makers, tailors, masons, stonemasons, carpenters, wheelwrights, and coopers were based there. The variety of trades shows how important the town was to the surrounding villages. For a walk through local history, this development offers a different perspective from the religious buildings and monuments.

Church and sculpture

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Místo is a Roman Catholic branch church dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It is a single-nave church; its nave is rectangular, and the presbytery is set apart and almost rectangular. This offers a concise description of the church’s layout: the elongated main space is followed by the recessed presbytery. The sculptural decoration of the main altar comes from the workshop of sculptor and woodcarver Jakub Eberle. The church has been a protected monument since 1963.

Column, crucifix, and relocated monuments

A Baroque Holy Trinity Column dating from 1724 stands right next to the church. It originally stood in the village square. Two stone crosses can also be found near the church, one of which is a protected monument. A wayside shrine dating from the early 16th century stands on the road to Vysoká Jedle.

Another monument is a crucifix on a Corinthian column. Its reliefs depict the Virgin Mary, Saint Šebestián, Saint Rozálie, and Saint Roch. The crucifix dates from before 1800 and was moved from Kralupy to Místo. Smaller monuments from villages destroyed by open-cast lignite mining at the Nástup mine were also brought to Místo. The region’s transformation through open-cast mining is therefore also part of the historical context of these monuments.

Nature and trails

The Prunéřovské údolí Nature Park and the Kokrháč Natural Monument are mentioned in the planning context of Místo; Kokrháč is part of this nature park. The Kokrháč–Hasištejn Natura 2000 site, number 5475, is also listed. These designations add protected natural areas to the local history without conflating the different types of protection.

Vysoká Jedle has been part of Místo since 1955 and is the starting point for the hike “From birch groves, over rocks and waterfalls, to Hasištejn” (“Z březových hájů přes skály a vodopády na Hasištejn”). The Chapel of Panny Marie is located there and is listed as a point of interest along the hike. According to a notice published in April 2024, the chapel was again regularly used for services after its restoration.

The Prunéřov–Černovice cycling route project is described as a proposal that would involve Prunéřov, Místo, Málkov, Spořice, and Černovice. Its stated aims are to provide a leisure activity, a direct connection to the existing Ohře Cycle Route, and a slower-paced route for cyclists, families with children, and tourists. This is a project, not a statement that a cycling route is already available for use.

Choose Místo as your destination

When planning your trip, you can distinguish between Místo’s historical monuments, the named hike starting in Vysoká Jedle, and the planned cycling route project. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Místo, consider whether local history or a hike will be the main focus of your stay. This can help you choose a destination based on the interests that matter most to you.
