Háj: Mountain Meadows, Lime Kiln and Winter Sports

Háj combines nature experiences, a remarkable industrial monument, and clearly described activities for cyclists and winter sports enthusiasts. Anyone wishing to tailor their stay to different interests will find both a peat-rich mountain meadow landscape and routes, circular tours, and lessons for children and adults. The Vápenka lime kiln adds a place where the region’s history can be explored particularly vividly.

Mountain Meadows and Protected Landscape

Horská louka u Háje lies in the valley of the Černá voda stream and is part of the Novodomské rašeliniště–Kovářská bird protection area. The area protects a peat-rich mountain meadow with rare and endangered plant species. It is characterized by a mosaic of different mountain meadow types, including marsh meadows, wet meadow thistle meadows, meadowsweet stands, golden oat-grass meadows, and matgrass meadows. There are also transitions to wet spruce forests and peatland spruce forests. For visitors who want to experience the landscape not merely as a backdrop but in its different forms, this provides a distinctive natural highlight of their stay.

The Vápenka Lime Kiln

The Vápenka lime kiln lies in the forested landscape between Háj u Loučné pod Klínovcem and Kovářská. It preserves two octagonal Rumford shaft kilns and the remains of additional buildings from the original complex, which was built in the mid-19th century. This is therefore not just a single structure, but a preserved ensemble with visible traces of its former use. The lime kiln was fully restored in 2019 and is open to the public. This makes it possible to combine an excursion into the landscape with a visit to an unusual historic site.

Cycling Loops, Educational Trail and Viewpoints

For an active day, the 15 km Loučná–Háj–Vápenka–Kovářská–České Hamry loop and back is a good choice. The easy cycling route has an elevation gain of 295 m and is also suitable for children. A longer option is the Loučná pod Klínovcem educational trail, with 13 stations and a length of just under 17.5 km. The Loučenský circuit passes through Háj and climbs to Meluzína, offering views of Oberwiesenthal and Loučná pod Klínovcem.

There is also a clearly defined option for a trip without a bicycle: the Kolem Vápenky Nordic walking loop is 8 km long and offers views of the former Vápenka lime kiln, Palouk mrtvých, and the Švédský pomník. The routes therefore differ significantly in length and focus: the cycling loop connects several places, the educational trail emphasizes its stations, the Loučenský circuit focuses on the ascent and the views, while Kolem Vápenky centers on the lime kiln and other points of interest.

Winter Sports with Lessons

The Klínovec Ski and Snowboard School has its visitor address at Háj 178, 43191 Loučná pod Klínovcem. During the winter season, it offers public ski and snowboard lessons for children and adults. For lessons, the school has two private lifts and its own gentle slopes with a safe run-out. In addition, the public Klínovec Ski and Snowboard School offers several basic ski or snowboard courses every year. The groups are intended for complete beginners and those with a little experience.
