Strupčice: History, Maják and Family Experiences

Strupčice combines an unusually long local history with visible traces of change and attractions for a variety of family outings. Between the church, lookout tower, nature trail, cycle path and regional festivals, it offers a destination that links culture with active discovery.

History around the Church and Village Centre

Strupčice was first mentioned in writing in 1352. Archaeological investigations also show that the surrounding area had already been settled more than 4,000 years ago. An important cultural landmark is the Church of Saint Wenceslas: its origins date back to the 14th century, before it was rebuilt in 1780.

On the church grounds stands a state-protected, roughly hewn stone cross from the 16th century, originally from Vrchnice. Behind the church, in a park by the stream, there is another protected landmark: a sandstone statue by Johann Vetter dating from 1723. It originally came from the abandoned village of Tušimice.

Maják: Views of a Transformed Landscape

The wooden Maják lookout tower stands on a former spoil heap about 0.5 km northeast of Strupčice. Its location points to the industrial history of the surrounding area. Four painted maps compare today’s panorama with the landscape before hard-coal mining and with the villages that disappeared below the Ore Mountains. This makes the lookout point a place where you can also explore the history of the landscape.

Traces of earlier use have also been preserved on the western edge of Strupčice. Near the surviving brickworks chimneys, an approximately 10 m-high excavation wall remains accessible. Its approximate height and location on the edge of the village give this excursion site a clear geological and industrial character.

Nature Trail, Cycle Path and Sports Complex

For families, the Chomutovsko mobile application offers two child-friendly versions of the existing nature trail in Strupčice: one for younger children and one for older schoolchildren. Cyclists will also find a specific point of reference: the Chomutov–Strupčice cycle path runs about 500 m from the Maják lookout point. The Strupčice sports complex includes a swimming pool, mini-golf, beach volleyball courts and a campsite. This allows you to alternate between historical stops, a bike ride and sporting activities when planning your visit.

Festivals with a Regional Character

Traditional festivals in Strupčice include the garlic celebrations and the Saint Wenceslas pilgrimage, with the character of a market and fair. At the garlic celebrations, the refreshment stalls offered traditional garlic specialities, including garlic soup, potato pancakes, garlic strudel, koláčky and spreads. These events complement the historical sights with a culinary and community aspect.
