Castle, Churches and Historic Details

Mašťov Castle is a Baroque castle and stands on the site of a Gothic castle first mentioned in 1281. The transition from its Gothic origins to Baroque design makes the castle a place where different historical periods come together in the townscape. For your information, it is important to note that the castle is currently not open to the public. The town’s sights also include several Baroque statues.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Mašťov is originally Gothic and was rebuilt in the Baroque style. A historic crypt of the Mladota family is located at this church. The building therefore combines its older Gothic origins, later Baroque alterations and another historic detail. The Church of Saint Barbara is also originally Gothic; in the 19th century, it was redesigned in the Neo-Romanesque style. Together with the town’s heritage zone, the two churches give the townscape different historical accents.

The Jewish cemetery also preserves several elements of its history: its historic layout, gravestones, the perimeter wall and an access road. The Mašťov town heritage zone is wheelchair accessible. Castle Park and Protected Landscapes

The Mašťov castle park is a protected garden monument and part of the castle grounds. It has a network of footpaths, two ponds and the Dubá II watercourse. These documented features make the park an independent landscape attraction alongside the architectural history of the castle.

Another special feature is the Radechovské skály rock formations. They comprise rock walls with warmth- and drought-loving flora as well as surrounding woodland. The alternation between rock and forest shapes the character of this area. The area is an exceptionally valuable zoological and botanical site with protected species and a function as a breeding and refuge area.

Firefighting History and Local Traditions

Since May 2020, the Muzeum Historické Hasičské Techniky Mašťov has been located in the rooms of a former barn in Mašťov. The firefighting museum displays historic helmets and other historic objects, portable and non-portable fire pumps, firefighting uniforms, firefighting medals and badges, firefighting diplomas and toys with a firefighting theme. The exhibition thus combines technical equipment, clothing, awards and toys to provide a broad insight into firefighting history. Traditional pilgrimages take place in Mašťov in August, complementing the historic sights with a religious custom.
