Experience Spořice: Culture, Archaeology and Active Recreation

The history of the village dates back at least to 1281: that year, Spořice was first mentioned in a document concerning transfers of property belonging to the Teutonic Order in Chomutov.

St. Bartholomew: fortified church and distinctive tower

In the south of Spořice, the Church of St. Bartholomew stands on an island formed by a moat. It has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. In the second half of the 15th century and at the beginning of the 16th century, it was converted into a fortified church. Its slender Late Gothic tower leans and is compared with the famous Tower of Pisa. The fortified church grounds are also an archaeological area in category ÚAN I.

Archaeology from the Bronze Age to the La Tène culture

At the Střelnice site, there is a polycultural settlement, meaning a settlement site with traces of various cultural phases. The finds discovered there are kept at the Chomutov District Museum. A rescue excavation southeast of Spořice uncovered a settlement from the Early Bronze Age. Settlements of the Hallstatt and La Tène cultures were also identified in the same archaeological area. The La Tène settlement yielded a burial with personal jewellery. The documented archaeological record thus spans several periods.

Historical details in the village square

The historic agricultural estate in Spořice's village square comprised a multi-storey residential building, a gate and farm buildings. The gate bears the inscription “HANS KELLER 1567”. The Zemědělský dvůr u kostela is regarded as an important monument in Spořice. Such specific details turn a walk through the village into a discovery of historic traces of buildings and everyday life, without limiting the history to a single building.

Sportovní hala Spořice is located near Spořice swimming pool. It can be reserved by sports teams as well as by the general public.
