Kovarska: Ironworks History and Walking Trails

If you are looking for a place with industrial history and distinctive historical details, Kovářská offers several discoveries within a compact thematic area. The town lies in the valley of the Černý potok, also known as Černá voda. Its history is closely connected with the mining and processing of iron ore. At the same time, the church, chapels, monuments, and a walking trail lead through different layers of the town’s history. Valley, Ore, and the Early Blast Furnace

The origins of Kovářská are linked to the mining and processing of iron ore. The early importance of this history is particularly evident in a blast furnace: in 1599, a true blast furnace was built in Kovářská, one of the first in Bohemia. A blast furnace was used to process ore into metal. The old lime kiln and the ruins of the former ironworks are also part of these historical traces.

Baroque Town Centre and Historical Signs

The original town centre is dominated by the Baroque Church of St. Michael, built in 1709–1710. Inside, it has a coffered ceiling with images of saints. In front of the church stands a Baroque Marian column dating from 1706. Behind the municipal building in the direction of the Černý potok, there is also the Chapel of St. Mark, built in 1913. An iron cross dating from 1871 stands nearby.

Traces of Iron Processing and Remembrance Culture

Behind Kovářská railway station are the remains of an old lime kiln built in the 1850s. A stone monument near the station commemorates an event from that period and until recently bore a relief with the German inscription “Švédský hrob 1641 – Rašeliniště smrti”. Kovářská railway station is located on the Chomutov–Vejprty railway line. The Museum of the Air Battle over the Ore Mountains on 11 September 1944 organises annual meetings of aviation veterans in Kovářská.

A Walking Trail with a Historical Focus

The “Mrtvou cestou na Vápenku” walking trail begins in the square in Kovářská and passes the ruins of the former ironworks in Kovářská. The return route follows the “Mrtvou cesta” forest path back to Kovářská. In this way, the trail connects the town centre with a specific site of earlier iron processing without equating the historical significance of the former ironworks with any present-day use.
