Plzeň-Město District – Culture, Nature and Special Experiences
Plzeň-Město District can be explored in very different ways: amid historic cityscapes, special insights into Pilsen’s beer tradition, interactive science and landscapes for walks or bike rides. Pilsen offers a dense succession of cultural experiences; at the same time, nature destinations and excursions with their own distinct character are part of the range of travel options.
Pilsen Between Science, Animals and Urban History
At Pilsen Zoo, falconers show birds in flight in the amphitheater and accompany the performance with explanations. The Techmania Science Center, on the other hand, focuses on interactive exhibitions, a 3D planetarium, workshop and laboratory programs, films on an interactive globe and science shows. The location itself is also remarkable: Techmania is housed in historic buildings of the Škoda Works.
Those who would like to combine history and architecture will find several very different stops in Pilsen. The tower of St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral is, at 102.26 meters, the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic. After almost 300 steps, it opens up views over the city and the wider region. Construction of the cathedral began with the founding of the city in 1295 and was completed in the early 16th century. The permanent exhibition “Tady žili Židé” is located in the upper galleries of the Great Synagogue.
The Semler Residence is the only Loos design featuring the Raumplan principle and can be visited as part of guided tours. At the Puppet Museum, visitors may move the puppets themselves and put on their own theatrical performance on stage. Another unusual perspective is offered by the historic underground visitor route: it is approximately 800 meters long and runs nine to twelve meters underground.
Beer Tradition and Regional Culinary Experiences
Pilsen is closely associated with the production of Pilsner Urquell. Large wooden barrels are still used in the brewery cellars for the production of small quantities. The tour of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery includes a tasting of unfiltered, unpasteurized beer drawn from oak lagering barrels in the historic brewery cellars. DEPO2015 offers a different form of culinary discovery; it is a cultural venue for exhibitions, conferences, events and festivals. It also hosts the DEPO Street Food Market with food stalls and food trucks.
Ponds, Paths and Excursions into Nature
The Bolevec pond system in Pilsen comprises ten ponds; several of them were created as early as the middle of the 15th century. Today, there are cycle paths, hiking trails, inline skating routes and two barrier-free circular trails. The Bolevec ponds are also accessible by public transport. For a stay in which outdoor activities and visits to the city are intended to stand side by side, they therefore form a clearly distinct area of experiences.
A cycle route leads from Pilsen to Hradiště, where play elements for children and swimming opportunities are available. More than 60 pine species from around the world grow in Sofronka Arboretum. The range therefore extends from short nature observations to more active days on paths and cycle routes, without the city’s cultural offerings fading into the background.
Historical Destinations in the Wider Area
The Rotunda of St. Peter and Paul can be reached on foot via a marked educational trail and offers views of the surrounding landscape. As a Romanesque sacral building, it is one of the oldest intact surviving church buildings of its kind in the Czech Republic. Near the Plzeň-Město District, Radyně Castle was founded by Charles IV in the middle of the 14th century to protect the trade route between Prague and Bavaria. Both destinations complement a stay in the city with historical sites, each offering its own perspective on the route and landscape.
When searching for suitable accommodation, you can therefore weigh up whether to focus on Pilsen’s sights and culinary offerings, nature-oriented activities at the Bolevec ponds or excursions to historical destinations. Your choice of location should reflect the travel profile you prefer for your days in Plzeň-Město District.
