Nezvěstice between rivers, cycling routes and festival traditions

Nezvěstice combines a distinctive waterside location with cycling routes, traces of history and festivals that remain part of local cultural life to this day. The town lies at the confluence of the Úslava and Bradava rivers and the Střížovický potok stream. The Varta hill rises above Nezvěstice; from there, it offers a broad view of the surrounding area. The confluence of the three waterways is in the town, while Varta lies above Nezvěstice.

Cycling on two routes

For cyclists, the interregional Cycling Route 31 is particularly interesting. It leads from Blovice and Žákava to Nezvěstice. Further along, it runs from Plzeň via Starý Plzenec and Šťáhlavy through Nezvěstice to Nepomuk. Nezvěstice lies on this section between Šťáhlavy and Nepomuk. The route thus connects a section from the direction of Blovice and Žákava with the longer route between Plzeň and Nepomuk.

In addition, the local cycling route CT 2125 follows Road III/1774 in the direction of Želčany. The local route supplements this interregional connection with a different direction: CT 2125 points towards Želčany, while Route 31 runs through several towns between Plzeň and Nepomuk.

Historical traces and the Church of All Saints

Near Nezvěstice, at Pod Zámečkem, the partially preserved earth rampart of a former fortress can still be seen. The town is also home to the Church of All Saints. It dates from the first half of the 14th century and was remodelled in 1606–1607. The earth rampart is located at Pod Zámečkem, while the church stands in the town itself. Its history thus combines an origin in the 14th century with a remodelling at the beginning of the 17th century.

At the Church of All Saints, services are held at 2:30 p.m. on the first Friday of the month and at 8:00 a.m. on Sundays in odd-numbered weeks. The Sunday service therefore depends on the calendar week, while the Friday service recurs monthly.

Local festivals with their own rhythm

Nezvěstice expresses its traditions not only through its buildings. The carnival procession was revived as a local tradition in 2007, is held every five years with the participation of the entire community, and continues to be considered a popular folk festival. Staročeské máje was celebrated again in Nezvěstice in 2008 and continues to rank among the largest cultural festivals there. Vynášení Zimy is a festive procession and a custom welcoming spring in Nezvěstice.
