Salaš U Velehradu – Views, Nature and History
Views of the Chřiby Mountains
The Rozhledna Salaš lookout tower is a notable reason to get to know Salaš U Velehradu more closely. It is located in the municipality of Salaš u Velehradu and offers beautiful views of the Chřiby Mountains. The lookout itself is unusually designed: the Rozhledna Salaš takes the form of two interlocking sevens. Anyone who wants to experience a view not only as a backdrop but also as a distinctive structure in its own right will find a clear and distinctive destination here.
Salašské pěnovce Nature Reserve
Another facet of the surrounding area is represented by the Salašské pěnovce nature reserve. It lies in the cadastral area of Salaš u Velehradu above a right-bank tributary of the Salaška, approximately 1.2 km northwest of Salaš. The protected area is dedicated to the habitat of forest tufa springs. In the upper part of the slope of Salašské pěnovce, there are two smaller forest tufa springs.
At this nature reserve, the focus is not on distant views but on the habitat of forest tufa springs. The forest tufa springs give the site its distinctive natural character and clearly differentiate it from the viewing experience at the Rozhledna Salaš.
A Chapel with a Short, Precise Building History
The cultural side of Salaš includes the Kaple sv. Jana Nepomuckého na Salaši. It is a branch church of the Velehrad Basilica and is dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. Construction began in May 1933; the chapel was ceremonially consecrated on 8 October 1933. This tightly defined building history makes the small religious structure a specific place where regional religious and local history can be traced.
A Memorial Site for the Tragedy of Salaš
Another cultural focus is the remembrance of the tragedy of Salaš. It took place on 29 April 1945 in Vápenice near Salaš. In the tragedy, 19 men and one woman were executed; most of them were residents of Salaš.
The present form of the memorial to the victims of the tragedy of Salaš dates from 1985. The memorial includes monuments bearing the names of all the victims of the tragedy. This site complements the views, nature and chapel with an explicitly commemorative historical dimension.
Marked Route and Bus Connection
The marked hiking route to the Rozhledna Salaš leads from Velehrad to Salaš along a blue-marked trail. From the signpost in the lower part of Salaš, the route continues along a yellow-marked trail to the upper part of the village. Bus services run from Staré Město via Velehrad to Salaš; the Obecnà úřad stop is recommended for the ascent to the Rozhledna Salaš.
