Ostrožská Lhota: village history, culture and wine cycling routes

Ostrožská Lhota combines archaeological discoveries, vibrant folk culture and routes through the countryside. The village lies on the edge of the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area; the Okluky stream, which belongs to the Morava River basin, flows through Ostrožská Lhota. Archaeology and everyday history

The first written mention of Ostrožská Lhota dates from 1371. At that time, the village bore the Latin name Majori Lhota. The Archaeological Museum of Ostrožská Lhota covers a broad span of time: its finds range from the Palaeolithic to the modern era. Exhibits include replicas of prehistoric vessels, a model of the settlement in 1827, Bronze Age jewellery and pruning knives.

Under the direction of archaeologist Mgr. Tomáš Zeman, Ph.D., the museum also offers archaeological excursions for groups and schools. Separate from this is the Municipal Museum, which features archaeological finds and is open from April to October on Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A vivid counterpart to the archaeology is the Lidové muzeum in the Lidový domek Háječek, house no. 143. It includes a historic kitchen and living quarters with period furnishings. Exhibits include wooden furniture, butter-making equipment, religious pictures and children's toys more than 100 years old. Visits take place from the end of April to the end of September on Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; by arrangement, visits are possible year-round.

Churches, pilgrimage and trails

The village's history includes the Church of St James the Greater, built in 1908 in the late Baroque style, as well as a stone statue of St John the Baptist from 1747. The statue stands at an intersection in the centre of Ostrožská Lhota. Svatý Antonínek is an important Roman Catholic Baroque pilgrimage chapel from the 17th century, located on Antonínský kopec between Ostrožská Lhota and Blatnice pod Svatým Antonínkem.

A 5 km route from Ostrožská Lhota to the pilgrimage site is documented as a hiking option. Another hike can begin at the car park by the municipal office. It passes the Church of St James the Greater and then continues through the fields outside the village. This allows you to choose between a specific destination and a route connecting the village centre with the surrounding countryside.

Cycling routes and regional festivals

Two major wine cycling routes cross in Ostrožská Lhota: the Uherskohradišťská and Strážnická cycling routes. Those planning their trip around regional traditions should also take note of the different festival schedules. The Ženáčské hody festival has been held in Ostrožská Lhota every two years in even-numbered years since 2006. The Slovácké hody s právem festival takes place every odd-numbered year and was first held there in 1956; one documented edition was celebrated for the 29th time.
