Culture, craftsmanship and living tradition

The Šumice Museum contains around 420 collected museum objects, presented in three thematically arranged rooms. One is designed as a traditional living room, another is dedicated to folk costumes, and the third focuses on agriculture and craftsmanship. The current exhibition explores the lives of Šumice’s inhabitants, their folk costumes, craftsmanship and leisure activities. The museum is located in the attic of a historic municipal building dating from the 1930s.

Various forms of rural cultural heritage can also be encountered outside the museum. Pipalův mlýn is an important technical monument and is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. It preserves almost completely intact machinery and technical equipment, as well as artefacts from the lives of millers in the first half of the 20th century. Trchalíkova usedlost is an immovable cultural monument comprising a historic barn, a dowry house and a carriage shed. It also includes a still-functioning horse gin for powering agricultural equipment and a functioning replica of a fruit-drying barn.

Other historical testimonies add their own distinctive touches: Hasoňova chalupa is a preserved smallholder’s or small farmer’s house with ceiling beams dated to 1839. Šerkova usedlost is one of the oldest buildings in Šumice; its history has been documented since 1777.

The local tradition includes the one-day Šumické hody festival. Today, it takes place on the second Sunday in September and is known in the surrounding area as “dřinkové hody”. At this time, the fruit ripens; in Šumice, plum butter was made and fruit was dried. In this way, the date of the festival is linked to traditional forms of processing and storing food.

Landscapes and trails for days out of all kinds

The Ovčírka area lies on the northern edge of Šumice and is part of the Natura 2000 network. The landscape area also includes the Údolí Bánovského potoka site, which encompasses the cadastral area of Šumice u Uherského Brodu. Its most valuable part consists of a xerothermic meadow—warm-loving and dry—with individual wild pear trees and a strip of blackthorn scrub.

The Putování po šumických pověstech route leads to a viewpoint overlooking Šumice, Nezdenice and the 384-metre-high Babí hůrka hill. A marked route starts at Šumice railway station. The section to Nivky is considered manageable for parents with small children and for seniors. Three ponds in Šumice are used for sport fishing. In addition, a cycle path built several years ago leads to Šumice.

The railway line between Veselí nad Moravou and the Vlárský průsmyk runs through Šumice.

Other places include Břestek, Komňa, Košíky, Bílovice, Bystřice Pod Lopeníkem, Nivnice, Částkov and Slavkov.
