Nature trails and Moravian traditions in Žítková

Žítková combines a distinctive landscape with trails, protected areas, traditional houses and regional culture. The surroundings can be explored particularly vividly along the Moravské Kopanice Educational Trail. It introduces the landscape around Žítková and Starý Hrozenkov and presents historical and natural points of interest at 14 stations. In this way, the trail combines nature observation and history without reducing the landscape to mere scenery.

The trail follows forest and field paths and is intended for hikers, mountain bikers and, in winter, cross-country skiers. Several sections are available for planning: The main circular route is 11.6 km long and has an elevation gain of 410 m. The branch to Lokov covers 4.7 km with an elevation gain of 110 m, while the branch to Hutě covers 1.1 km with an elevation gain of 50 m. When the branches are included, the total length is 23.1 km. This allows the visit to be planned as a shorter combination of trails or a more extensive tour, without confusing the individual distance figures.

Protected areas and distinctive landscapes

An important natural point along the route is Hutě Nature Reserve. It protects a landscape of considerable value, particularly important plant and animal communities. On the Moravské Kopanice Educational Trail, Hutě is considered the most valuable protected area along the route. The reserve also overlaps with the Bílé Karpaty European protected site (3314) and the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area (71). Žítková also has protected orchid meadows. These different forms of protection make it clear that the landscape is shaped not only by its trails but also by its plant and animal life.

The local character also includes a group of traditional houses that visitors can still find in Žítková, as well as an information centre with a mini-museum. Tourist maps and a flyer with tourist routes are available there. For on-site orientation, the information centre complements the educational trail's thematic stations with information for further exploration.

Chapel, crafts and regional specialities

One cultural highlight is the Kaple Panny Marie Kopanické. It was built in 1990 and consecrated on 8 September 1991. The chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Kopanice, Saints Cyril and Methodius, Agnes of Bohemia and Saint Zdislava of Lämberg. The altar features a statue of the Virgin Mary of Kopanice with the Child, wearing traditional Kopaničáři dress. The architecture, dedication and furnishings each convey the regional tradition in their own way.

The local food culture is also part of Žítková. At Sýr od kapličky, house number 201, the Šustekovi couple process sheep's milk, produce sheep's-milk products and sell them. The products on offer include sheep's cheese, Brynza, Žinčica and Oštěpek; light refreshments are also available. The products and refreshments are available from April to October and are generally unavailable outside this period. Those choosing accommodation in Žítková can therefore take this seasonal feature into account when planning their trip.
