Slavkov: Nature, Educational Trails and Folklore

Slavkov combines protected landscapes, nature observation, signposted trails of discovery and living traditions. Those planning a trip with varied experiences will find specific points of interest here: the village lies in the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area, several nature reserves shape the surrounding area, and trails lead to distinctive landscapes and places of remembrance.

Nature Among Meadows, Forests and Wetlands

The Dolnoněmčanské louky Nature Reserve lies in the cadastral area of Slavkov u Uherského Brodu. It protects a landscape of high value with significant plant and animal communities. The Kolo Nature Reserve is also botanically remarkable: it is home to species-rich wetland vegetation and a significant population of the heath spotted orchid.

The Porážky National Nature Reserve is home to the only known site in Central Europe of the robust lousewort. The highly endangered sand leek also grows in Slavkovský háj. Accompanied visits to some of these protected areas are possible from Slavkov; this does not mean that every individual area is freely accessible.

Educational Trails and Routes for Active Days

The “Kronika slavkovské krajiny” educational trail comprises ten stations and begins in front of the Charitní dům sv. Petra a Pavla. It therefore offers a clearly structured way to learn about the history and landscape of Slavkov in individual stages. The Lucká hledačka provides another combination of orientation and physical activity. It comprises two routes jointly prepared by the town of Hluk and the municipalities of Slavkov and Dolní Němčí.

Route A of the Lucká hledačka leads from Horní Němčí via Slavkov to Dolní Němčí. The Lucké pole memorial site can be reached from Slavkov via newly built cycle paths. The summit of Velká Javořina can also be reached from Slavkov by bicycle and on foot.

Places of Remembrance and Folklore

A bell tower dating from 1927 stands in the centre of Slavkov. It was built on the site of an earlier wooden bell tower, creating a visible link to the local history of architecture and remembrance. In the Horní pole area, the memorial pear tree has stood for more than 300 years on the border between Horní Němčí and Slavkov. The administration of the Bílé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area designated it a memorial tree in 2009.

A special event for those interested in culture is Folklorní den. It takes place every even-numbered year in August and presents traditional costumes, folklore ensembles from the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and a traditional crafts fair.

Nature Excursions and Historical Traces

At the request of tourists and nature enthusiasts, ČSOP Pantoflíček organises nature excursions in the region several times a year. Requests are particularly frequent during the orchid flowering season. This note describes the documented period of interest, not a fixed annual event calendar. In addition, the Lucké pole landscape is associated with an encounter between the troops of the Bohemian Prince Vladislav I and the Hungarian King Štěpán II; under unclear circumstances, the encounter eventually led to a clash.
