Medlovice lies at the foot of the Chřiby Hills and combines a distinctive landscape with vibrant Moravian traditions. The Slovácko dialect is spoken in the village. Those planning a trip featuring cultural discoveries, insights into traditional crafts and excursions in the surrounding area will find unusual points of interest here – from a historic memorial site to a geological outcrop.

Traditions and Memorial Sites

A chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, dating from 1866, is one of Medlovice’s visible historic landmarks. A monument to T. G. Masaryk was also unveiled here in 1930. The bust of T. G. Masaryk and a memorial plaque commemorating those who fell in the Second World War were reinstalled after the war. As a result, the village is home to several reminders that bring different chapters of its local history to life. Living traditions also shape the character of Medlovice. Local traditions include the Slovácké hody harvest festival on 16 October, the feast day of Saint Gall. A costumed group took part in the Slovácké hody s právem 2025 celebration. The form of the hodové právo preserves an element of tradition connected with the area’s former affiliation with the Buchlov estate. Easter processions with ratchets are also still held in Medlovice. Older women continue to wear clothing featuring elements of the Podhorácko folk costume.

Traditional handcrafting is a particular focus here. Medlovice has two ceramic workshops where visitors can choose ceramic products and may even be able to make a cup or vase themselves. The Náplavovi Ceramic Workshop is considered well worth visiting. Traditional utility ceramics such as cups, bowls, teapots, jars and jugs are made there entirely by hand on the potter’s wheel. This offers you a tangible insight into a production process in which a regionally rooted craft can become a shared experience.

Cycle Paths and an Unusual Quarry

Cycle routes run through the surroundings of Medlovice, including the Velkomoravská poutní cesta of the Buchlov Microregion. The Slovácko cycling excursion route “Přes rozhledny na Hradisko sv. Klimenta” also passes through Polešovice, Vážany, Medlovice, Vřesovice and Osvětimany; Medlovice lies between Vážany and Vřesovice. A geological feature of interest is the abandoned Medlovický Quarry, a quarry for porcelainite. It offers a unique complete profile exposure of porcelainites and is considered the only site of its kind in Moravia. Red, purple, blue-grey and brown porcelainites are exposed in the quarry to a thickness of 5 metres. The Medlovický Quarry is freely accessible without restrictions; by car, it is possible to drive to within 250 metres. Medlovice also offers further sporting opportunities at the multifunctional Orange sports court, built in 2017. It is intended for tennis, nohejbal, volleyball, small-sided football and basketball. This allows you to choose between cultural impressions, cycling routes, geology and various forms of physical activity.
