Modrá: Great Moravian History and Nature by the Water

Modrá combines vivid traces of Great Moravian history with aquatic worlds, protected animals and paths through the Chřiby landscape. Anyone wishing to combine a stay with culture, nature observation and active exploration will find a wide variety of experiences here within a compact thematic area.

Experience Great Moravian History

At the Modrá Archaeological Open-Air Museum, you can see a reconstruction of a fortified settlement from the period of Great Moravia. The site was created on the basis of actual archaeological finds; some of these finds were made directly at the location of the open-air museum. From the palace of the archaeological open-air museum, you can reach the Klenotnice Velké Moravy exhibition hall. Modrá is also home to the early medieval Church of St John, which is now a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

The Modrá Archaeological Open-Air Museum and the municipality of Modrá organise events in every season, many of which have developed into traditions over the years. At the archaeological open-air museum, you can also try out traditional craft techniques. This allows you to discover history not only through buildings and exhibitions, but also through practical activities.

Water, Fish and Aurochs

Živá voda is a botanical and limnological exhibition about life in and around water. The focus is on aquatic animals and plants from the Morava River, the adjacent streams and the ponds. At the Živá voda Modrá exhibition, you can observe carp, pike and beluga sturgeon in a pond through a glass tunnel. The complex also includes an artificially created natural swimming biotope whose water is filtered naturally with the help of special plants.

From Živá voda, you can reach the Aurochs Trail via a footbridge that runs up to four metres above the ground. There are twelve thematic stations along this route. Here, you can observe aurochs and learn interesting facts about their history and their return to the Moravian pastures after 2,000 years.

Educational Trail through Modrá and the Chřiby

The 5 km-long Fauna and Flora of the Chřiby educational trail leads through Modrá and is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Its route begins at the Convent Pond near the pilgrimage basilica in Velehrad, leads through Modrá and the Modranský potok valley, and extends into the Chřiby Mountains. A cascade of six ponds is located in the Modranský potok valley. Numerous rare and protected animals live there, especially amphibians.

Above the northern edge of Modrá stands the small wooden Židoviny lookout tower. This means that, in addition to archaeological sites, exhibitions and opportunities to observe aquatic life, the village also offers a viewpoint over the landscape.

Regional Traditions and Flavours

At the Centrum historie a tradic Modrá, you can taste regional fruit brandies and wine. You can also learn about the fruit distillation process and the history of viticulture there. This insight into a regional tradition complements visits to the historical and natural-history sites.
