Tupesy – Ceramics, Wine and Living Tradition

Tupesy combines a strong ceramics heritage with Slovácko traditions, winegrowing and trails through a fertile landscape. The village lies in the fertile floodplain of the Zlechovský potok stream. For your travel planning, this creates an interesting mix of culture, short excursions, cycling routes and events held every year.

Ceramics and History in the Village Centre

The Tupesy Ceramics Museum is located in Tupesy’s oldest building, dating from 1832. The house is a monument of vernacular architecture and represents the home of a smallholder and potter. At the same time, the museum is housed in a former ceramics production building in the centre of Tupesy.

At the museum, you can not only learn about the ceramics tradition but also make a plate yourself in the ceramics workshop. Another historical reference can be found in the “Za Branou” area, where a Slavic sunken-featured building from the late 9th or early 10th century was discovered. The finds include numerous fragments of differently shaped vessels. Those interested in the development of the village will therefore find both a history of craftsmanship and an archaeological insight here.

Chapel, Pilgrimage and Trails through Tupesy

The Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built from sandstone blocks; its construction was completed in 1852. It is designed in the Neo-Romanesque style and is associated with the traditional Tupesy pilgrimage held around 31 May. After the last pilgrimage in 1967, this tradition was revived in 2014.

For a shorter stay outdoors, the 2 km-long Ceramic Trail is a good option. It leads to places connected with the local ceramics tradition and is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Original wood carvings line the route, while benches offer views of the Chřiby panorama. This makes it possible to combine a cultural visit to the village with a manageable route.

There is also a clearly described connection for longer cycling trips: the Velkomoravská pilgrimage route 5150 runs from Staré Město railway station via Velehrad to Tupesy. The section to Tupesy is 8 km long and suitable for all cyclists. In addition, beyond Staré Město, a paved farm road towards Zlechov connects to the Moravian Wine Route 5150, which is directed towards Tupesy; this route is 5 km long.

Wine, Festivals and Local Tradition

The long-standing tradition of winegrowing and winemaking shapes the character of Tupesy. Wine tastings have been held at the beginning of April each year since 1990. In autumn, the folk festival “Císařské hody” follows, taking place in Tupesy on the third Sunday in October each year. Slovácko tradition is also still evident today during Fašanky, with carnival processions accompanied by cymbal music.
