Chlumec U Chabařovic: History and Trails Around Horka

Churches, Chapels and Local Architectural History

The Church of St. Havel was built in Chlumec between 1847 and 1852. Inside are figurative Renaissance tombs of the Kölbl family dating from 1606 to 1619. The site also includes an enclosing wall with an entrance gate, a bell tower and the church on an elevated spur of land.

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity was built in memory of the averting of the plague epidemic in 1680. Its wall frescoes from 1691 depict the Te Deum. The building is also remarkable for its shape: the chapel has a floor plan in the form of an equilateral triangle.

The Stations of the Cross begins at the Church of St. Havel and climbs around the basalt hill of Horka to the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. It consists of fourteen sandstone niche chapels, combining religious architecture with a path across the distinctive hill.

Memorial Sites of the Battle of Chlumec

The Battle of Chlumec took place on 29 and 30 August 1813 near Chlumec and Přestanov in northern Bohemia. The 1813 Battle Monument stands on the eastern edge of Chlumec at the foot of Horka. It was erected in 1913 to mark the centenary of the battle. The 1813 Battle Anniversary Monument is a 26-metre-high Art Nouveau monument topped by a lion sculpture.

The culture of remembrance is also a distinct experience in Chlumec to this day. Since 1992, on the last Saturday in August each year, people interested in the Napoleonic Wars and members of military history associations have gathered at Horka for military history demonstrations from the period. Martínkovna also documents the original folk architecture of Chlumec.

Hiking Trails, Family Route and Cycle Path

From Chlumec, an approximately 7-kilometre-long green hiking trail leads past the U Laviček viewpoint and Mravenčí vrch. The 7.5-kilometre-long yellow hiking trail through Chlumec connects memorial sites and other important locations associated with the Battle of Chlumec, leading to Horka and the 1813 Battle Anniversary Monument.

If you are travelling with children, the approximately 4-kilometre-long family route offers tasks, puzzles and a map. For longer cycling trips, Cycle Route 3009 runs directly through Chlumec and is approximately 33 kilometres long. The different route lengths help you choose whether to focus your day on a short discovery, a themed walk or an extended cycling tour.
