Zubrnice: Heritage Conservation, Railway Museum and Hiking Trails

Zubrnice is a destination for anyone who wants to combine historic places and special discoveries while travelling through the Czech Republic. Zubrnice has been a heritage conservation area since 1995. It is also home to a railway museum, an open-air museum, preserved buildings, a historic mill and marked hiking trails. This makes it possible to shape your stay around both cultural history and activity.

Historic Traces in Zubrnice

A prominent religious landmark is the Church of St Mary Magdalene. The church is originally Gothic and was later remodelled in the Baroque style. The combination of its Gothic origins and Baroque remodelling makes different periods visible in a single building. Together with the hop farmer’s house, it forms a tour that combines religious and agricultural architecture. The agricultural estate at No. 61 also tells the story of the region’s architectural and economic history: it is based on a two-storey hop farmer’s house dating from 1808. The Kupecký krám – Franz a Oswald Saidl, No. 74, also houses an exhibition on mangling and washing clothes. These different sites present historic architecture and everyday life in earlier times from several perspectives.

Railway and Open-Air Museum

The Zubrnice Railway Museum also preserves a special piece of film history. On display are the Tatra Dm6 railcar from the film Ostře sledované vlaky and a Hungarian railcar from the film Rebelové. The two railcars complement each other as different historic vehicles, each with its own connection to film. Visitors can also see a historic waiting room and a railway operations office. One wooden building is dedicated to the Velké Březno – Lovečkovice – Verneřice – Úštěk horní nádraží railway line (LGWA). The waiting room, railway operations office and wooden building broaden the focus from the vehicles to the spaces and railway line. The museum therefore offers several ways of exploring the railway: vehicles, rooms and the history of a specific line.

The Zubrnice Open-Air Museum in Mlýnské údolí contains a small working farm mill. The working Valšův mlýn is also accessible in the valley of the Luční potok stream. Another detail of the area’s history is the Baroque fountain from Střížovice. It dates from 1695 and was the first building relocated to Zubrnice in 1977. Together with the hop farmer’s house and the museum buildings, it creates a multifaceted picture of historic ways of living and working.

Hiking and Historic Railway Connection

Red or green marked hiking trails lead from Zubrnice. Anyone wishing to combine their stay with a longer route can consider Stage IV of the Výroční stezka trail. It runs from Buková hora via Zubrnice to Homole u Panny, Sedlo and Litýš. For travel by a special mode of transport, tourist line T3 operates on weekends and public holidays from 28 March to 1 November 2026.
