Chabařovice between city history and Lake Milada

Chabařovice offers you a journey between local history and landscapes. In the town, the Stará radnice, the Muzeum města Chabařovice, historic churches and a memorial site tell of various chapters of the past. At the same time, the Vyklická cesta connects Chabařovice with Lake Milada, whose surroundings now offer opportunities for walking, cycling and water sports.

Historical traces in Chabařovice

The Stará radnice is an architecturally interesting building dating from 1609 that separates the two squares of Chabařovice. It was renovated in the mid-1990s, preserving the original clock tower and its manually wound mechanism.

The Muzeum města Chabařovice presents an exhibition on the history of Chabařovice from its beginnings to the Second World War. It also covers the history of the villages that had to make way for lignite mining. The museum is currently open to the public by prior arrangement. Its chronological scope connects the town’s early history with a profound chapter in the history of lignite mining and also helps explain the changes to the settlement landscape.

The “Památník bitvy na běhání” memorial commemorates the battle of 1426, in which the Hussite army led by Prokop Holý fought against a numerically superior Crusader army. Another tradition is the Chabařovická pouť, a regular event held on the third weekend of May. The memorial site complements the architectural history with a military chapter, while the Chabařovická pouť marks a recurring tradition in the annual calendar.

Churches and special viewpoints

The “Kostel narození Panny Marie” church stands in the middle of Chabařovice’s square. Its first written mention dates from 1352. Construction of the present church began from the ground up in 1699. The “Kostelík sv. Jana Křtitele” church was built in 1822 on the site of a demolished chapel and has a grotto that has survived to this day. From there, you can enjoy a panorama of Chabařovice against the backdrop of the Ore Mountains. Together with the preserved grotto and the panorama, it offers an insight into various forms of cultural heritage: architectural history, religious tradition and the perception of the landscape.

Lake Milada and the Vyklická cesta

Lake Milada was created by flooding the remaining open-pit mine of the Chabařovice–Milada mine. The lake and its surroundings were opened to the public in 2015. The area currently offers opportunities especially for walking, cycling and water sports. Its origins in the remaining open-pit mine also add a history of landscape transformation to the journey and complement the historical sites with outdoor activities.

The Vyklická cesta connects Chabařovice with Lake Milada. From the Vyklická cesta, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the lake and a wide panorama.
