Povrly: Discover the Elbe Valley, history and cycling

Povrly combines nature, local history and cycling into a destination with several clearly distinct sides. The Elbe Valley shapes the landscape, while churches, log houses and the history of the town reveal its cultural layers. The Elbe Valley and distinctive landscape features

In the Povrly area, the Porta Bohemica Natura 2000 site encompasses a deep, often gorge-like Elbe Valley, the river course, riverside vegetation and selected, predominantly wooded slopes of the gorge valley. Water, the shape of the valley and wooded slopes lie closely together here as distinct landscape elements. One prominent point is Bradlo, a 452 m-high viewing rock above Povrly. From there, the view extends across the deeply incised valley, the Lužecký stream and its tributary. In the surrounding area of the 380 m-high Kozí vrch are a landslide area and an old quarry. Povrly therefore offers both the river landscape and geologically shaped landforms as key points of orientation.

Churches, local history and historic buildings

The history of the town can also be traced through tangible features. Povrly's origins date back to the 12th century and are connected with the work of the Order of St. John in north-west Bohemia. The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dates from 1936 and stands on the site of an older wooden chapel built in 1808. Povrly's agricultural past in the 17th to 19th centuries is reflected in typical log houses. In Roztoky, the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist is listed as a protected historic building. The Blansko castle ruins in Mírkov are also listed as a protected historic building. When planning your cultural itinerary, you can therefore distinguish between sacred architecture, local history, traditional building styles and a castle complex.

Cycle route, outdoor pool and Elbe crossing

Povrly offers two differently described cycling experiences for active days. Cycle route 3066 passes through Povrly and goes by the local outdoor swimming pool; cyclists can stop there and swim. Another cycling tour continues through Povrly to Mírkov and then climbs uphill for approximately 1.5 km to Blansko Castle. There, visitors can enjoy the view and read information about the castle. Cycle route 3066 therefore has a different focus from the tour via Mírkov: here, the outdoor pool and swimming break are at the forefront, while there, the castle, views and information take center stage. The year-round Velké Březno–Povrly ferry enables travelers to cross the Elbe to Povrly.
