Moravský Žižkov – Vineyards, Cellars and Wine Route

Moravský Žižkov combines winemaking, distinctive buildings and a landscape that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Chapel, Church and the Agrární Cellar Quarter

The Chapel of St. Florian is the oldest building in Moravský Žižkov and dates from 1852. Its entrance is decorated with Slovácko ornaments. This means that a single building directly showcases both the long history of the village and a distinctive regional style.

A more recent architectural landmark is the Church of Our Lady of Victory. Construction began in 2000, and the church was consecrated on 17 August 2002. The complex includes a free-standing tower crowned with a cross and a bell installation for three bells. The time gap between it and the Chapel of St. Florian makes the two buildings distinct testimonies to the history of the village.

Agrární has its own distinctive cultural character as a cellar quarter with a long tradition of winemaking and folklore. At its centre is a small square with old agricultural machinery and seating; wine cellars surround it on two sides. The traditional “Zarážení hory” event also took place on 2 September 2023 in the Agrární cellar area in Moravský Žižkov. This focal point of the village may be interesting when choosing accommodation if you place greater emphasis on winemaking and local culture than on a purely nature-focused getaway.

Wine Route, Orchards and Views

The Žižkovská Wine Trail is an approximately two-kilometre circular route through vineyards. It passes wine cellars and the municipality’s main sights. Along the route, cyclists and walkers can discover the largest wine-cellar complex in the Benátky district and walk through the oldest wine lane in Agrární. The route thus combines several different impressions without requiring separate consideration of different themes.

Extensive orchards and vineyards lie around Žižkovský rybník and are suitable for walks and cycling trips. The Žižkovská Wine Trail also leads to a hill between the vineyards. From there, there are views of a landscape framed by Pálava and the White Carpathian Massif. Depending on whether you prefer walking through the cellar quarters and visiting the buildings or experiencing open countryside, you can adjust the focus of your stay accordingly.

Žižkovský rybník as a Natural Area

Žižkovský rybník and part of the Prušánky watercourse valley above the pond form the local ecological stability system. In the infiltration area at the end of the floodplain and below the dam of the Žižkovský rybník biocentre, there are valuable plant and animal communities. In this way, the natural area adds another distinctly landscape-oriented perspective to the history of winemaking and the village.
