Klentnice: Hiking, Castle Ruins and Wine

Klentnice is a destination for travellers who want to combine nature, visible history and the character of a Czech wine village. Protected landscapes, a distinctive hiking mountain and historical traces dating back to the Bronze Age lie around the village. There is also a Gothic castle ruin, a Late Baroque church, local wine cellars and small, special places to visit. Protected landscape around Stolová hora

The entire cadastral area of Klentnice belongs to the Pálava Protected Landscape Area. The National Nature Reserve Tabulová is a particularly characteristic part of it. It encompasses the flat summit of Stolová hora and the adjacent Růžový vrch with the Sirotčí hrádek ruins. The landscape is not uniformly forested: the reserve comprises a mosaic of forests and various types of steppe. The rare Ethiopian sage also grows here, and in the Czech Republic it is believed to be native to this location only.

Another natural attraction is Kočičí kámen. The protected natural monument is characterised by a rocky limestone outcrop. Its dry grasslands are home to more than 200 species of higher plants. Klentnice therefore brings together different landscapes: the flat summit of Stolová hora, woodland and steppe areas in the nature reserve, and the limestone-rich natural environment of Kočičí kámen.

Hiking trail, archaeological traces and castle ruins

Stolová hora can be reached from Klentnice via a red-marked hiking trail for visitors. Archaeological evidence of settlement dating back to the Neolithic has been found on the summit. There is also evidence of a fortified Bronze Age settlement; the remains of ramparts and walls are still visible today. The trail therefore leads not only into a protected landscape but also to traces of various settlement periods.

Above Klentnice lie the Sirotčí hrádek ruins, a Gothic castle ruin from the 13th century. The site has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964. An important restriction should be considered when planning your visit: entry to Sirotčí hrádek is at your own risk. The ruins are therefore a historic site with their own clear visitor rule, not an ordinary exhibition space.

Village history, wine and small museums

There is also a listed heritage complex in the centre of Klentnice. It includes the single-nave Late Baroque Church of St George. The Vinařský spolek Klentnice offers another way to experience the local character, welcoming visitors to local wineries and wine cellars. Klentnické hody are also among the cultural events held in Klentnice during the year.

For a smaller discovery away from the castle ruins and nature reserve, the Coffee Museum in Klentnice invites visitors to discover historic coffee machines in an equally old house. Mýdlárna na Pálavském vršku has a shop selling soaps and natural cosmetics, as well as handmade products by Czech artists. The range of experiences during a stay thus extends from a marked hiking trail and archaeological remains to wine, local culture, historic equipment and handmade goods.
