Bořetice – Trails, Wine Cellars and Local Culture

Bořetice combines trails through the countryside with wine offerings and a local culture in which the church, festivals and the satirical Republic of Kraví hora stand side by side. Hiking, cycling, views, wine cellars and regular events each shape a different side of the village.

Hiking, Cycling and Views

The Kravihorská Tourist Trail is primarily intended for hiking and is also easily accessible by bicycle. The 30-km Modré Hory cycling and hiking trail connects Bořetice with Kobylí, Němčičky, Velké Pavlovice and Vrbice. This provides two different routes: the Kravihorská Tourist Trail focuses on hiking, while Modré Hory connects five villages over 30 km. On the first route, hiking remains the main purpose; on the second, the focus is on connecting several villages along a designated route.

The Kraví hora lookout tower is a 15-metre-high wooden tower. From there, you can enjoy views of wine-growing villages, making the wine landscape visible from the lookout point as well. The Zázmoníky nature reserve is also located on the northern edge of Bořetice’s cadastral area. The lookout tower and the nature reserve thus represent views of wine-growing villages and a protected landscape area at the edge of the cadastral area.

Wine Cellars and Unusual Traditions

Local winegrowers open the wine cellars beneath Kraví hora to residents and tourists. The Pod Kraví Horou wine cellars comprise around 260 cellars. Vinařství Hempl offers individually arranged guided wine tastings in its family wine cellar. The two offerings differ in scope: beneath Kraví hora, winegrowers open their cellars, while at Hempl, the individually arranged tour takes place in the family wine cellar. One of the unusual local features is the satirical Republic of Kraví hora. It was founded in 2000 and organizes wine exhibitions. Its satirical character and exhibition programme are therefore distinctive forms of the local wine culture.

Church and Local Festivals

Bořetice’s culture includes the Church of Saint Anne. It was restored in 1680 and is a Baroque church from the first quarter of the 18th century. The church building thus combines a recorded restoration date with the Baroque architecture of the early 18th century.

There are also two regular events during the year. Anenská pouť takes place on the last Sunday in July. The hody festival takes place in Bořetice on the first Sunday in August. Anenská pouť therefore comes before the hody: first, the event is held on the last Sunday in July, followed by the event on the first Sunday in August.
