Šakvice – Village History, Festivals and the Košt vín Wine Tasting

Šakvice is a place whose character emerges from the interplay of its village structure, sacred heritage and deeply rooted traditions. The historic village layout features farmsteads on both sides of the broad Dědina village green. There are also St. Barbara’s Church, historic sculptures in the village square and several recurring events. The broad Dědina village green defines the historic structure of Šakvice. The farmsteads lie on both sides of the green and make a historic settlement pattern visible. Another important trace of the village’s history is St. Barbara’s Church. It has a Gothic core and is designated as a protected cultural monument. Its presbytery, the area around the chancel, retains medieval architectural elements. During repair work in March 2000, paintings and structural elements dating back to the 12th century were also discovered. These finds add a distinctly older historical dimension to the church than the Gothic core alone would suggest.

Historic Sculptures in the Village Square

The village square also contributes to Šakvice’s cultural identity. The statue of Saint Isidore, the patron saint of farmers, dates from 1748. The sculpture group of Saint John of Nepomuk is also once again located in the village square. It was donated to Šakvice in 1724. The sculpture group of the Holy Trinity has stood in the village square since 1913. Together, these works point to different periods and religious artistic traditions, while the village square retains its function as a compact central meeting place.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Those who want to experience Šakvice on a particular date will find a range of occasions in the local festival calendar. Vostatky traditionally takes place at the end of February. The cultural programme is organised by FS Hanýsek from Šakvice and ends with an evening programme and the ceremonial burial of the bass.

The traditional Hody celebrations in Šakvice take place every year on the third weekend of July. They are organised by the local Stárci and Stárky. For travel planning, this creates a clear seasonal distinction between the Vostatky date at the end of winter and Hody in July. Another recurring event is the Košt vín wine tasting on Easter Sunday. It includes wines from residents of Šakvice as well as exhibitors from surrounding villages. The Košt vín thus complements the village’s historical themes with an occasion centred on wine tastings by local and surrounding exhibitors.
