Hlohovec – Cultural Landscape, Ponds and Wine Experiences

Hlohovec combines a historic cultural landscape with ponds, forests, vineyards and regional traditions. The area is located in the Lednice–Valtice Complex landscape heritage zone, which was built mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries under the rule of the Liechtenstein family. This makes Hlohovec a place where you can discover architectural history, observe nature, cycle and enjoy local cuisine in many different ways. The scenery changes between bodies of water, woodland areas and vineyards, with culture and landscape shaping the character of the place together.

Buildings by the Pond and in the Village

The village centre is home to the Church of St Bartholomew, a single-nave late Classicist building dating from 1832. The Hraniční zámeček provides a different architectural accent. The Classicist building was erected in 1826–1827 on the shore of the Hlohovecký rybník. This pond is also part of Hlohovec’s cadastral area. If you are interested in historic architectural forms, you can view both a religious building and a Classicist building in the Hlohovec landscape. In this way, historic architectural forms can be encountered both in the village centre and by the water.

Ponds, Limestone and Woodland Landscapes

The Hlohovecký rybník is part of the interconnected system of the Lednické rybníky. This system is protected to safeguard birds and other animals, plant life and the character of the landscape. Stará hora rises west of Hlohovec, with Tertiary limestone on which remnants of steppe grassland have been preserved. The Boří les extends across the southeastern part of the municipal area. The landscape-rich Bezručova Alley also runs through the Hlohovec area. Here, the landscape alternates between water, limestone and woodland, placing a variety of natural environments at the heart of exploration.

Cycling and Hiking between Culture and Vineyards

Hlohovec is a starting point for hikes and cycling tours between the Lednické rybníky, the former Liechtenstein forests and the vineyards. Cycle Route 411 connects Valtice, Hlohovec, the Hraniční zámeček and Lednice over a distance of approximately 12 kilometres. For planning your day, the approximate length provides a clear framework: you can make the cycling tour itself the main focus, or combine it with stops at the places and landscape areas along the route. This brings vineyards, former Liechtenstein forests and historic buildings together in a single outing.

Wine Cellars, Festivals and Regional Dishes

The local character also includes the village’s wine cellars, where visitors can drink wine. Traditional Slovakian costume festivals take place in Hlohovec twice a year. Local dishes include opuchlé buchty, žgance and slížky. This combination of wine, festival culture and regional dishes adds a culinary dimension to the natural and cultural experiences. Those who do not want to explore the place solely through its landscape can therefore also plan their stay around wine cellars, festival culture and regional cuisine.
